Setting eggs today. I'm a hatching virgin.

Lol, I know what you mean! I think it's because you can trust chicky babies to show up at a certain time more than human babies. So each hour starts feeling like a human baby day.

Edited to add my response--oops.

Thanks true these chicks are suppose to be more reliable, lol.

lorrir- If it makes you feel better, I haven't heard peeping or pips. And I keep looking with my flashlight also. But I promised myself I am not going to look again until I put my boys down for the night, eek! I am crossing my fingers for a pip by then.

1ernurse- sorry I am a first timer also, but I have heard of chicks hatching past 24 days. How is your humidity and temp?

I have some eBay eggs coming in the mail (black mottled and self blue d'Uccles), so I'll be on this thread in another few days too!

I'm nervous about it, b/c my friend and I tried to hatch our own eggs last year and had zero success, even with 3 different batches of shipped eggs. I've been really looking forward to these breeds, so I'm hoping this time will be way better.

I'll be using a still-air hovabator and turning them myself.

Just to check, this is what I've read I should be doing:
-Keep the eggs point-down in a carton at 50-60 degrees until they all get here and are ready to go into the 'bator, rocking them slightly 2x/day to keep the embryos moving around

Day 1-Day 18
-Keep the eggs in the incubator in a well-ventilated, constant-temp room,
-Keep temp at 99-100 deg F and humidity at 58-60%,
-Turn eggs 3-5x/day

Day 19-Day 21 ("lockdown")
- Raise humidity to ~65%,
-Don't turn eggs
-Don't open incubator until chicks hatch (except for emergency assistance)

Anyone have any other tips for me with this incubator set-up? I really want these babies to be ok!

I'm not positive but I think your temps need to be higher in in a still air incubator. I think it's 101, you should look it up. I could have read wrong. Good luck!

4 cute little guys, 1 left should be sometime this morning. I know that they are suppose to stay in the bater until they are dry, can I take they out as they dry or do I need to wait until the last one is dry? How long can they live without food and water? How's everyone else doing? Any progress Newlyweds?
