Setting eggs tonight! Anyone want to join me?

Oh, that's a bummer on the orp eggs.

Are you tossing the clear eggs, or giving them a little more time?

I candled my eggs tonight, at day 7. Six of my eggs had moving chicks inside!! Navy is still clear as a bell, so I'm guessing it's a dud. I'll give it til day 10, but I'll be shocked if it does anything.

PrincetonPeeps, did you candle today?

Nope, not tossing any eggs yet, but I'm fairly certain. I'm quite surprised at the numbers, I expected the EE's to show mostly clear as they are supposed to be bred from true Aracaunas, and I've read their rumplessness coupled with a genetic problinfield to high infertility rates.

In any event, have a great Monday all!

My knowledge on genetics is kind of shaky, but I'm wondering if maybe the fatal defect is a recessive trait, and would only be an issue if you bred two aracanas together. Your babies may be carriers, but as long as they weren't bred back to aracanas, maybe they'll be ok.

I could be totally wrong though- like I said, my knowledge of genetics is elementary school at best.

I set a (duck) egg last Tuesday. I candled it today and don't see any veins. I set it it in my hova-bator on an automatic turner. This is my second time hatching my own but it's hard to remember what the first week was like. I see about dime sized blob at the bottom of the egg (small end) when I candle it. With some "floaty" things attached to blob.

How does one tell for certain that some of the eggs arent fertile, or arent goin to hatch for another reason? And, how long should you wait to determine if those eggs should be thrown out?

Maybe posting pics of our candled eggs later tonight...?

Princton Peeps: post number 48, page 5 of this thread has a link with great example picture and even some of clear eggs. As for me, I won't toss any eggs until lockdown unless I'm absolutely certain (and I never am) that they're duds. I've read terrible stories about others having eggs explode in their incubators, so I do give the eggs a whiff as often as possible, in search of possible exploding eggs.

in my years of incubating eggs, I have always waited to candle at day 10. sometimes I have candled around day 7 but never handle the eggs before day 10 other than turning..to prevent jarring and losing peeps. I would just hold the light over the top part of the egg and look for development. By day 10 as seen in the link I posted on page 5 you should be able to tell if there is growth. if the egg is clear just like the day it was put in the bator then it is safe to assume it is a "dud". You want to keep a close eye on these false hope givers because they can rotten and the bacteria can spread to good eggs and stink up the place..or even worse bust! I have had a time seeing thru dark marans eggs and also the ee eggs but you should be able to see some progress. I hope you all have good luck in your hatching and let each one bring you more knowledge..egg Topsy's are also a good way to learn the stage of development the chick fetus died on giving you more of a visual and the development of the chick. that is something I do not show my boys though... If i can get my camera to take better pics I will post a few pics of the peeps I had hatch last week to get everyone in the "mood" for little fuzzies in the near future!! Good Night All!!!!
