Setting my eggs tonight (April 10) Any tips?

Eastin and Jenn, sorry about whining about only getting two chicks.

It sound like your problems are worse. Lets all get lots more eggs and keep working on this.

Eastin I've taken to candling my eggs when I get them from the post office. One batch of 9 had 5 with disrupted air sacs. Glad I didn't wait 21 days on those or blame myself.

Jenn, one of mine took 20hrs from pip to hatch. The other one took 2 hours. The deformed one I helped, pipped on its own and never progressed.

The three that were supposed to go into lockdown today did not show enough development. So I cracked them... early quitters.

My next groups aren't due for lockdown til next Sun, Mon, Tues. Cochins and Ameraucanas. Wish me luck.

something will happen today. I did notice 1 more that has pipped...so we'll see if it makes it out. I did move the bator to the bathroom where I can run the shower and keep the humidity up...It's dry here in texas

Sorry there are so many rough hatches.

I thought ours wasn't good. We got 7 chicks out of 17 eggs. The broody abandoned the last 10 eggs.

We moved them with her to lower nest with her and the chicks but she keeps pushing a few out. Oh well. At least we got 7. 4 cuckoo marans, 2 ees, 1 buff orp so we got a nice variety. Now watch, they will all be roosters! lol Good luck to those still hatching!

well, if it is just from someone they could be a barnyard mix since most people let their breeds all run together. Like mine, if I sent some eggs I have an ameraucana roo over different color ameraucana hens, a couple araucana, an appnzeller spitzhauben, a few cuckoo marans, etc...so although you might get some pure the rest are just mixes. Usually, I have found, black is a black australorp or jersey giant, they are the most common.

well, my tally from this hatch is out of the 19 eggs that went in I have 15 chicks BUT I also started out with about 32 eggs. I have done this a LOT and toss more early on. Some breeds are also more delicate than others. I have had better luck with banties but have since got rid of them all, they are cute but I wanted BIG eggs

. It is a learning process and you will learn from your mistakes and make the proper corrections. For the newbies to incubating you might want to try eggs close to you, preferably not shipped, it helps not having all the extra variables.
I also bought 6+ eggs of a breed I NEED for my project, got 7 and only 1 made it to the hatcher. Didn't hatch, opened it and it was too big to move, I think it was a pullet egg

. I have since bought another batch of 6+ (2 in hatcher now) and just in case bought anohter 18+. I have only found one breeder and have spent about $150 and I am not too confident in the 18 I just set. My point is that no matter the bator, the hatcher, the operator, sometimes it just doesn't work. But it's great fun when it does work for you.
wish me luck, just added more ameraucana from pips&peeps(Jean) to the hatcher last night.
