Setting on Good Friday

Hens don't actually sit on the chicks. She is raised up alittle so she doesn't squish them. Can you imagine staying in that position?

My broody has hatched 8, one started to zip and died, 4 were clear (includes one she threw out early on -- all from one hen that I wanted chicks from the most), 1 is pipped and chirping and 2 others that have dark masses (but, hard to tell with my flashlight if they are chicks). I'm hoping by this afternoon to know what the final count is.
It doen't look like my black Jersey Giant is the father of any of them so far.

Well we woke to very sad news my son who adores animals andhelps with all the ones we have. His cat had her kittens and all six were dead I have never heard of this that all die. he was very upset as his bday is in 5 days and he wanted babies to have around. I dont know what happened to cause this she came in and was covered in blood her sister had a litter 5 weeks ago and never had that much blood. On a happier note all the chicks are eating and drinking. iwell add pics when i can remember how to do that on here LOL

Starry, sorry about the kittens. How is the Mama cat?

Ok, I looked out the window this morning and saw my Broody out of her box with the chicks all around her. I went to look, because earlier this morning there was 1 egg that had a hole and two others that had not pipped, yet.
The eggs were coldish. I thought the one was dead at first, but I finally saw that it was breathing. Then, I went into panic mode. I looked around, hoping a battery operated incubator would fall from the sky. I couldn't get Mama to go back in to the nest, either. So, that's when I did it. I put the egg in my bra. I openned the other two eggs. They were quitters sometime before today.
So, there I am with an egg in my bra. I was working out some logistics in my head (about how to work out the heatlamp and thermometer and a tote), but, hoping I could get my broody to go back to the nest. I finally managed to get most of the chicks in, then Mama and the rest of the chicks followed. I put the egg back under her.
Several hours later, I checked and saw that BB (Bra Baby) had hatched and was fine.

Final count is 9 out of 16.

OK clan!!!! On day 21 (nite) and not 1 PIP!!!! I started with 24 eggs...and candled a couple times and removed several doing nothing or stopped doing and left me with 15 I thought were good...But NOT a thing yet and a bit worried and anxious as this is my 1st time incubating. My daughter (6) is asking whats up and have NO answer 4 her except that sometimes mother nature takes charge and we have NO control over if it will work or not. (and 21 days is a LONG time to wait for a 6 y old and her mommy!!!)

I came home from work tonight expecting to see a pip or two. Instead I saw a little white chickie!

The one that pipped this morning didn't make it. I feel better now. I am not a chicken killer after all.
