Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

Hey! Another Ocean wife! Very cool! We are on opposite sides of the country - but we can do our virtual "cheers"... somewhere over Texas I guess! Well, hubby just called - on his way home from a 2 day lobster trip - so better chill that wine...and get dinner started, and take a peek in the bator of course!

Yep, fellow member of the Ocean Wives Club! His schedule is better now than it used to be. He was gone across the Atlantic to Africa and back for 3 to 4 months. Only communication was by emails. Brought me back some cool stuff though. Now he works at the local Port and comes home every night...for now.

Thanks for the link for silki care..I feed my chicks Fermented Feed...no pasty butt ever. But this is my first silky hatch..

 

Yeah, I've tried, nothing happens. Maybe it's my IPad. I also can't do the fancy little emoticons with my IPad...

Wow, 3 to 4 months - I don't think I could handle that! Mine would be gone a week or so at most chasing salmon up to San Francisco and above. Hardest part for me is taking of my daddy hat and giving it back to him each time he walks in the door, then putting both hats back on again when he leaves. But, I am blessed that I have a great guy who works incredibly hard so that I can stay home with my kids! AND he supports my chicken habit!

I realize it's not fermented feed but my flock loves it when I sprout greens for them; I have been sprouting lentils. It's easy, doesn't take up too much room, is nutritious and you can eat it too!

Does everyone here take the eggs out of the carton for hatching? (I built my bator according to Rushlanepoutry's plans and he suggests leaving the eggs in the holders to hatch out). Good morning everyone!

Morning...Day 19 and on PIP watch! Nothing yet! Yes, I remove the eggs from the egg turner so the chicks can position themselves properly in the egg to hatch...which is when you see the little pip in the egg. This is why the humidity should be at it's highest (60% +) so the chicks can rotate easily inside the egg. I've heard of people doing this but I don't think it would be good for the egg to be standing on end for this process. I relate it to eggs under a hen hatching, they would be laying on their sides not small end down. Hope this info helps

Many ppl do hatch in a carton but usually cut the bottom out so their is air ciculation.They do well both ways i have heard but i also think down is better.I am doing a little project to see which is better.Som up some down on each hatch.Sso far hatches have been equal

I cut my cartons way down - and cut the bottoms out, so basically it is a "ring" to hold them. I did it last hatch with good result. The only problem I had is one egg pipped on the wrong end, but I turned the egg around and it hatched out perfectly. I don't think it matters one way or another - for me it keeps the hatched babies from kicking the unhatched one all over the place, and it keeps most of the egg shells in place so they aren't in the bottom of the bator in the water. I have seen people make "cups" with paper, and leave them on their side. I have hatched them on their side too. I did read in a Silkie breeder thread that that is how they always hatch , so I was following them for this hatch. There are some good threads on BYC on carton hatching.
