If I didn't have to ask my husband to build another coop (we have 3 now).....I would hatch quail with you all!! He is a wonderful man...but he does have his limits!!

HI Melinda, I have done pretty good with the wing feather method when the chicks are two or three days old. If the chicks are older than that...like mine that are approaching 3 weeks, you should be able to tell by the comb size on RIR, the male should be considerably larger than a pullet especially by 5 to 6 weeks. Plus they stand taller and have bigger feet. I have sexed my Black Australorp and Lavender Orps by the comb size at 3 weeks with good success.
Hope this info helps. How old are yours now? Take a pic and PM me if you like.![]()
Melinda, sorry you did not get to correct your chicks foot issues, but, glad you found the answer..
Jean,
When are you going to fire up the incubator? Do you still have eggs in? or did you toss them all? Mine are due this weekend. Lock down on the 7th. Transfer them to my other incubator for hatch, and than re set the new one for the Easter hatch. Back to back hatching!!I need to hatch out 300 chicks this year to sell for meat. I am going to take some time off after Easter and set both incubators full for my next hatch. The weather will be so much nicer. June baby's. I can get them outside right away.
I ordered Wyandottie chicks to arrive shortly. SLW and BLRW. I also have Imported Gold Laced Black Orpingtons coming in a few days.e
Justine - sorry for not responding sooner for your offer to help with the RIR sexing. I think she's a pullet based on her advanced feathering (now at 2wks) She was the only RIR to hatch so couldn't compare to other RIRs, sigh... How did your chick(s) with the curly toe end up? I kept mine splinted for a week but they curled right back up when I removed the splint. I have since determined that my incubator thermometers (2 reg & 1 digital) were running low so I was incubating at around 95deg the whole time.A friend has since given me an old fashioned mercury thermometer and I'm very confident in its accuracy (also proved my other 2 were wrong and the digital was right). All along I thought the digital was wrong, so only use it for the hygrometer - good grief.![]()
Hope you are having a great day!
melinda
Melinda, my curly toe ameraucana pullet is still curly toed! Thus I named her "Curly". She's healthy and jumps and flys up to the perch and plays just like the rest so she will be fine like that I guess.
Thanks for commenting on my POW for my coop...OMG, I felt so honored! I was shocked to see it there and my husband was so tickled to see his handywork featured.
I'm bummed I lost my bid on chocolate orps....bidding again =) sometimes the auction ends when I can't get in that last bid to WIN! LOL!
