Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

I set 35 eggs Friday. They are shipped eggs from two different breeders. One batch is from Catdance and silkies, the otheer batch is from Jim. It is like an experiment. In one shipment I had her add a warmer, in the other shipment, no warmer. I live in Wisconsin and we are experiencing freezing weather. I wanted to know if temperatures makes that big of a difference. I will candle on Friday. I did candle yesterday and some of the eggs have development that is visable, on most it is not. Most of my cells attached during the 24 hour rest. The really cold eggs I rested much longer because they were so cold and took so long to warm. All the egg that did not attach after 24 hours I did not turn for the first 24 hours in the bater and just checked them daily, If the cells attached I put them in the turner. I still have a few not in the turner.

Good hatching!!

We have almost identical stories! I set 17 shipped silkie eggs on Friday too! I left them in egg cartons upright until today, no turning! I candled today with 11 showing definite veining, and placed those on their sides in the bator and will start turning. Those with loose cells are still in egg cartons, and I also left in the "not sures" as it is only day 4. I have a hard time seeing definate aircells in many that have veining, but also don't see them "floating" around, so assuming they are quite small at this time. I have hatched before, and use the dry method for the most part. I keep a small container with water that keeps it between 35 and 40%. We are having Santa Anna winds right now, so it is very dry here in Southern California. I discovered Catdance's silkies last night! They are spectacular and I look forward to seeing how well your hatch goes! They are definately on my wish list for next go around!!

Quote: I am pretty excited about those silkie eggs. I know I will be upset at everyone that does not hatch. I am just thinking positive thoughts. I will feel better when I check on Friday. I did candle today and seen some more veining. Friday I will know more. The other shipment has less development. I think quite a few are infertle. Friday will be a tell for sure.

I did my candling, so far 12 , show signs of developing.

I live on the east coast and heat with a combination of elect. and wood.. My house gets quite dry. I use some water in the hatcher to keep it between 40 to 50 % that's what I did in my best hatch of 99% of shipped eggs. My genesis 1588 is set at 100 and seems to stay really close until the last week . I have to watch it then. The temp will rise because the chicks add their warmth. This time I am using ?? eggs . My roo is very young and doesn,t really have the hang of the kiss yet.

I like for the eggs to lose some water the first couple of weeks to increase the size of the air cell. It gives room for breathing later. I do increase the humidity the last week for hatching. If not the membrane can get to dry and the chick can be shrink wrapped in a tough membrane. This can make hatching hard for it. This is just my way I think different elevations and hum. ,parts of the ctry, do it differently. Gloria Jean

I agree, that is helpful info, Gloria Jean. My eggs are doing well and it's hard to candle most of my eggs because of the shell color but on the lighter green eggs, you can see red inside and a little heart beating...SO EXCITING!! I have one white egg in there to which is easy to see but I don't like to pick up the eggs too much so I will just leave them alone until I remove them from the turner for lockdown on Day 18!

I added some water this morning which I had done twice now since setting them on the 18th. The humidity is at 49% right now which is perfect and temp is right under 100. One day closer to lockdown...can't wait!!!

Hope everyone's eggs are doing good...can't wait to see pics of all of our hatchlings

So do you candle all 41 eggs or just spot check them? Ive only set 9, so that should be a snap (last famous words). And what kind of candler do you use? I don't have one but think ill just make one with a non-heat generating bulb (my hubby's maglite is really bright:)) Any suggestions?

They will be here tomorrow or Friday.
Incubator is doing good. I had one temprature
spike of 104 but it didn't stay there very long.
Now at 99-100.

did my first candling
here are my results

For the shipped silkie eggs with a hand warmer inside

I have 8 clear and 12 veins visable.

For the shipped eggs with out a hand warmer

I have 5 with veining and 7 to dark to see and 12 clear

Not good odds for shipped eggs
I have 17 eggs growing for sure and 7 posssibles and 20 clear on day 6.

I put 6 of my own in and they are all veining.

The shipment with out hand warmers I consider a fail at this point, but, the hatch is not done. I have never had veining start after day 7, but, who knows with shipped eggs and frozen temps. I will recandle at day 10 and toss the clear or stinky.
