Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

Hello all I am absolutely in love with this site and forum! When I raised chickens when I was younger and in 4-H and FFA I never found anything like this. My oldest two children (twin girls) are old enough for 4-H this year and so we have started the venture. They have shown pigs and rabbits for a few years now open class but just decided to start the chicken showing project. Only one of them is actually going to show chickens this year as sister wanted to stick to the bunnies. We currently have her a small flock (11 ladies and 1 big man) of barred rocks that she cares for and sells the eggs from, but have several chicks that we just bought in the brooder in the kitchen lol and several shipped eggs in the bator along with a few of her own barred eggs. Am anxious for the shipped eggs as we have been able to see some movement upon candling. They are due to hatch on the 1st of march with the barred rock eggs due a week or so later. Am super anxious to get more involved on the forum!

Hello and welcome!

I am a "chicken novice" myself. I've had a couple of chickens before but the were house chickens, very small.

I decided to go ahead with one of the things on my bucket list and that was to raise chickens. Although I can only have 10 where I live, I am thrilled to start this new adventure!
Picking up 3 chicks this evening and going to attempt to incubate/hatch 6 more when my incubator arrives....what a thrill!!

You're really going to enjoy this forum/website. Many people who are in the know about chickens and everything dealing with chickens....the friendliest folks around if you ask me.....I've only been here for a very short time and I'm loving it! There is probably a thread from the area/state you live in as well!

Chickenlicken- I just bought the same type of incubator from tsc- it was on sale getting ready for chick days. I've been wanting one but didn't want to geta still air bator after getting info from byc. Never hatched my own before, only put a light on some 'rescued' turkey eggs that all hatched after a few days. Hubby's work crew doing their job and had found nest where they had to put in a road. I didn't know anything about poultry back then and just got into chickens last year. I've already stopped and talked chicken hatching eggs with a couple of locals so I'm getting the new bator warmed up! I'm going to do a test run with 4 of my own rir eggs after it gets to steady temp.

I found mine at Wal-Mart   Yep they  carry almost everything there.   I still have not candled any eggs. I will do that on sun. or mon. to tell the truth I am just a bit hesitant this time with shipped eggs. shudder esp after the top two were frozen during shipment.  I should have let yard full of rocks know he is a really great guy . They were wrapped to perfection and it was not his fault.  It was NOT ANYONES really except the weather at the time.  Who knows  We may get lucky and some of them be winners after all.    Say a little prayer.   .

Wanted to update everyone on my catdance hatch. Today is day 20, had 3 hatch...a Lavender a paint and a white... here are my wet babies so far






Have 4 more pips but looks like I will have a break and possibly some sleep tonight haha so I think. I'm sure I will be up or dreaming of hatching chickies.

We candled tonight day 11 for the bantam cochin eggs we had shipped and 9 of 15 are nice and dark with lots of wiggles inside got rid of 1 early quitter and 5 clears. Still early on the barred rock eggs will check them in a few days. My daughter is SUPER EXCITED!

That's great that you have so many veining eggs. How's your temp and humidity? Bantam Cochins are so pretty! Good luck and keep us posted!
