Severe bumblefoot assistance

Sorry I missed the pictures until now. Did both have scabs? if so when you pulled them off were you able to get anything out? Their pus or infection isn't runny usually we have to pick out infection i use a sterile tweezer. You can also try a drawing salve or Epsom salt poultice on these If you can get these in Canada.

Only the biggest ones had scabs and I wasn't really able to get anything out. I didn't have a scalpel or exacto knife on hand. We'll pick one up tomorrow and try a proper extraction since that looks necessary.

What should we be doing about the smaller ones that don't have scabs?

Soaking with warm Epsom salt water. another BYCer uses clear iodine and a soft tooth brush to work on ones that aren't bad. @CoriM

When my Runner had bumble I had to make a small slit with a scalpel and pop the bumble out it was a hardcore.Yours doesn't look like the one my Runner had. You might want to keep up with the soaks for more than a few days just to soften the tissue up.Before cutting more I believe I would try a drawing salve or the Epsom salt poultice.

Thanks for all your help.

We have the two girls inside for now and their feet are wrapped up to keep them dry and not exposed. Would you suggest we keep them in a pen inside or can they go out in the run with the others while we work out the bumble ? They don't swim so as long as it's not raining I feel like they'll have less chance of stepping in their own poop as the run is quite large.

Sweet of you to give these girls the care they needed! The feet aren't terrible, but those two bumbles look painful and need attention. YouTube videos always make it easy:rolleyes:.

Can you order this epsom salt poultice from Amazon? It can draw infection out and I have had success with it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/buyagain?...mp=&crid=2G866LM1T0NXH&amp=&sprefix=epsom+sal

If so, I would slather both bumbles with that, cover that with gauze, then use 1 inch vet wrap to wrap the foot and keep the bandage in place. Reapply and change the bandage in the morning and before bed. As long as the run isn't wet and she's not going swimming, you can leave her with the group.

Alternately, you can do epsom salt soaks, apply triple antibiotic ointment (not the kind with pain reliever), and wrap.

Once things have scabbed over (usually takes 24-48 hours) I usually let my girls swim in clean fresh water, then re-apply ointments and bandages.

It's all a process and can take a couple weeks to see improvement. It's good to check feet regularly. If you see tiny scabs start i just give them a little brush with iodine on a toothbrush and let that dry - 2x a day, until they heal over.

Bless you for helping these girls. I'm sure they will recover!

Thanks! Yeah we'll order some Epsom salt poultice tonight.

Also Amazon is a good place to get a big pack of 1 inch vet wrap cheap. I've gone through a lot of it over the years!

We do need more :)

This is probably a dumb question but do you think we'd be able to keep them outside (again, these two don't swim) even if its a bit wet if we were somehow able to do a foot wrap and then have their feet in some sort of bag or bootie? If we have to we can keep them inside, but I think it's stressing them out a lot. One has laid two eggs now with no shell and they're not eating much either.

No, it's not a dumb question! I always keep my girls outside when dealing with bumble, but I have them on pine shavings that are dry and have a little fence to keep them out of the pool in my run. That way they're with the group but feet are staying dry. I have tried the plastic baggie over the foot and never found it to work. I think if they're not wading in water and mud it will stay pretty dry with the gauze - I either cut down a gauze pad or triple fold a thin piece of gauze roll. Then I cut two strips of vet wrap, about 15 inches long. I go around the ankle to secure it then sort of criss-cross around the toes, so the toes are still free and they can walk easily. Do the same with the second piece, just go the other direction through the toes this time. Make sure it's not too tight to cut off circulation or anything. I try to spread out the foot when I'm wrapping so it's in a walking position. If you want I can post photos of how I do it.

They sound stressed - I'm sure it's a lot, coming to a new living situation, then having to be handled this way. You're doing a good job!

Thanks for everything! If you had pictures of the wrap it'd be helpful :)
