Severe wry neck in 1 1/2 year old Polish hen?

Nutridrench also has iron. Is her neck completely limp? Could she have eaten something in the yard that was toxic, such as something dead or in a compost bed? Have you ever had any unexplained deaths or signs of lameness or Mareks disease in your flock? Hopefully, this is just due to dehydration and anemia. You can also learn tube feeding, which can be a safer and faster way of giving fluids and food. Here are the ingredients of Poultry NutriDrench:

Completely limp. The rest of her is not, and she wants to wiggle. I lost a lavender orp pullet last week, but the mites and anemia got to her. There was no lameness. I’ve only had a flock for a couple of years and this is my first experience with mites. It’s horrible!! As soon as I realized that there were mites, my husband helped me catch and dust them all.

Hydration...I even got up overnight to give her fluids, honey, and yolk. I believe I read around 65-70ml/day minimum? She’s tiny. No more than 1 1/2 lbs.

I do have an idiot Polish cockerel that is rough. He likes my two silver laced and I’m constantly batting him away. He wouldn’t have been able to touch her since early yesterday morning. I brought her inside to a crate around 9am. Could this be a delayed injury/swelling?

If this was dehydration or an injury, I would expect to see improvement, even though small. It's my hunch you may be dealing with something more serious than dehydration or anemia. Try putting some sugar in the next water you syringe into her. If that doesn't revive her, then I fear it's something on the order of a nerve destroying avian virus or toxic reaction to mold or plant toxin or petroleum distillate poisoning.

Last night she wouldn’t move her body, but today she’s squirming around. Just can’t move her neck/head. I guess I thought that was improvement. I can’t think for the life of me what she would’ve gotten into. She was with the rest of my flock until yesterday morning, then isolated with a pullet. The pullet is actually much improved, but this hen isn’t. I hated even buying the poultry dust because we just don’t use chemicals. I’m so sad about this girl. She’s beautiful and quirky. I don’t want to EU her, but I guess we may have to think about it. 😞

I really don’t think it was the permethrin dust. It is safe for chickens, and is used by many for lice or mites. What state are you in? If you should lose her, and I really hope not, keep her body cold inna cooler or refrigerator, and contact your state vet on Monday am for a necropsy. Hopefully the vitamins and feeding will help.

Texas. I believe I have a specimen kit already. Thanks for the help trying to figure this out.

Permethrin is an organic insecticide perfectly safe for poultry. It's simply coincidence, not cause, of this happening right after you dusted for mites.

Do the vitamin therapy, and give some sugar water to elevate her glucose levels. This also feeds the brain and may help restore some nerve control. Never assume the worst until you try the simple and obvious remedies.

I’ve been giving fluids/nutrition for a little over 48 hours now. I set alarms and gave some fluids with honey overnight, and today I’m seeing signs of improvement. She’s wanting to stand up and ate some on her own with a little help. She looks like she’s got the wry neck “twist” going on. I do think I maybe pinpointed the problem, but I’d like some feedback on it. I have searched to find what she could’ve gotten into, and think I found the culprit. There was a dish of food/treats hidden under a climbing toy that had molded. I smelled it before I even picked it up. She’s tiny, but eats everything. Botulism? And can wry neck be secondary to that? I put her on Tylan when I first saw the mucous and completely forgot to mention it in the chaos of trying to help her. At any rate, she’s improving and I’m planning to stick with it. I appreciate the help, @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock @azygous !!

Mold, if she ingested any, would explain the symptoms. I suggeste a molasses flush to flush any remaining mold from her intestines and upper digestive system.

Give her one teaspoon of molasses (honey won't do, sorry) in one-fourth cup warm water, and take away her other water source until she finishes this solution. It will stimulate mild diarrhea to flush her system of any lingering mold.

Continue the vitamin therapy until she fully recovers.
