SEVIN DUST for mites

I used to work for at a kennel where they poured sevin dust all over, when I first asked if it was safe the women that owned the place poured it in her dogs food and said ya its safe they can even eat it, needless to say she was a moron and that ended up being one of those nightmarish jobs

It seems to me the word safe is interpretive. Anyone that thinks any poison is safe should do a little research on the rising rates of retardation in children. But anyway putting sevin dust or de on chickens makes me think of what I used to do for mites on roaches. Obviously you cant use poison on roach and they get mites just like birds, some roaches even have there own type of mites that live on them only and some people think that they might be beneficial. What we did with roaches that got bad mite infestations was roll them around in flour kinda like your gonna deepfry them or something

and it worked great, basically the flour acts as a desiccant and dries out the mites. Now I dont know if this would work on birds but I certainly wouldnt think it would hurt to try.

The "shake and bake" method of mite control? Garlic is healthy, and rosemary and bay repel bugs...

They'd lock me up for sure, if I were to try dusting my hens like this.

eta: The toxicology profile on the active ingredient in Sevin dust is alarmingly similar to my illness profile. Growing up, the adults liberally dusted everything and everyone with the stuff. So I use it with the most care, only when the pests didn't respond to every other treatment. Although, I must say, flour and aromatic herbs has a certain logic to it.

and I'm off to buy it today... just need to run to the office to get some facemasks. Don't want to breath it in.

And in CA they say it causes cancer!

Maybe too late....but I bought the Livestock Dust at Tractor Supply for a feather lice problem that I discovered a few days ago. After comparing ingredients between it and the Sevin, I went with the Livestock Dust. Sevin is toxic and states "known by the state of california to cause cancer and reproductive problems".....not something I want to put on my birds or inhale myself.

Just sayin ~ Personal opinion ~ I HATE Sevin dust. Breathe it , it gets in your lungs, turns to a jelly like goop, stays there, a l o n g time. Even though I am not crazy about it either
liquid ivermectin is much safer IF USED IN PROPER DOSAGE. There are from what I understand two different strengths of Sevin dust. You use the lesser strength for bird ~ if you insist on using it at all.

Ivermectin in ANY form or dosage affects the central nervous of internal and external parasites. Unfortunately ivermectin products have been misused and overused as a miteacide in chickens. The primary purpose of ivomec is that it is a wormer, secondary benefit is that it kills mites and biting/sucking lice in other animals. It does not kill poultry lice unless they are opportunistic enough to come across a bloody area, then and only then will they suck blood. Because of its overuse, ivomec products are useless as wormers, but will still kill mites:

We have been using sevin dust since the 60's in our vegetable gardens, on our dogs, and since I've owned chickens....still here typing.
