SEVIN DUST for mites

Quote:
Why use DE when sevin dust is 95% DE and much cheaper than DE. I lightly sprinkle sevin dust inside the coop and nests, dont need to use too much. Here's a link, scroll down towards the bottom:

great link Dawg, thank you! Food grade DE in our neck of the woods sells for a little over $20.00 for a 40 lb bag. 5% Sevin dust is a lot more expensive locally because it can only be bought in small quantity containers/bags. Need an agricultural license to buy anything larger in our state but since DE is so cheap (everybody uses it in their dairy barns/feed) I haven't bothered to get a farmer to get some for me.

I did dust my girls and the coop with sevin, just feel better getting rid of the bugs, and am sure they are feeling better. So, I am wondering how long you wait to use eggs, I read one week. What do y'all practice? If the one week is correct, I guess we will be two weeks without eggs, including the second dusting. I do hate that part.

We've been using sevin dust since the 60's in our vegetable gardens, on our dogs over the years, and chickens. Technically there's a 7 day withdrawal period. We ate the eggs, and I'm still here typing.

honestly since it went on them, not in them, I never worried about withdrawl time either but then I am already an old fogie so????

BTW-there has never been a real study done on it. Just a better safe than sorry educated guess by those who are supposed to know?

is Sevendust good for killing the mite eggs I've been dealing with chickens for the past two years and this is my first time having to deal with mite

No, sevin dust has no effect on lice/mite eggs. Once you initially dust your birds, eggs hatch anywhere from 7 to 10 days later. That's when you redust your birds to kill larva before they become adults and reproduce again. The second dusting will eliminate lifecycle completion. Dont forget to do the same thing inside your coop and nests.

So my chickens have mites in the coop .... I am so new to this these are my first... born 5/20/14. I saw little tiny moving black dots. I clean poop out of the coop every day and change my pine shavings once a week...
I bought the permethine garden powder...

After reading more I have decided to take out all pine shavings...spray liquid sevin all over their old brooder cage... put some Sevin dust in my old knee hi hose... dust butts and wing pits...oil their legs just to be safe(using vaseline for this)...put them in their old brooder cage (~4ftx4ft ) take liquid sevin spray the entire coop and cracks down... turn on the fan and let it dry...put in minimal pine shavings...liquid sevin their run (about 17ft) wait a bit...put them back with some meal worms... repeat on the 10th and 15th... finish of with DE. I better not see one more mite or I will freak. Thank the Lord they are not laying or they would never lay again after this fiasco!

I wanted to use the DL method this winter... not sure how since I have to keep a look out for mites!

except don't know about chemical spraying the run since the mites are on the birds or hiding in the coop. I would be a bit concerned about them digging around and consuming the Sevin but I don't know what your run is constructed of.

My Grandfather sprinkled Sevin on his tomatoes 50 years ago. And they still sell it. My Grandfather did die eventually, but from smoking.
