Sexing Barred Rocks

I know it may still be a bit too early to know for certain, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on our baby Barred Rock pullet (hopefully).

Sassy is about 4.5 weeks in these pictures and she was born in a hatchery.











From what I've been reading she is likely a pullet because of her coloring, dark leg wash, early feathering on her head, and I believe the legs aren't too thick? However, in the last week or so she seems to have sprouted a bit of a comb and it is slightly pink.

What do you all think? We are first time chicken farmers now.

You definitely have a girl there!! Nice dark coloring all throughout. The males will have A LOT more white throughout them.

That's wonderful news! We were hoping that she was truly a she! That comb took us off guard. We have three other chicks that are the same age, but different breeds, and none of them have any combs yet.

I would say defiantly female. I have two BR roosters I got from Myers hatchery here's a pic they are almost 4 weeks now

. See how light in color they are. I have 3 month old females so ya def yours are girls

Not an expert but I agree!
My 6 week old barred rock is definitely a pullet, but I remember getting worried because it seemed like she started developing a comb before any of my other chicks, around 2 1/2-3 weeks or so (even before my EE roo). Plus she's my only BR so I didn't have anything to compare her too. Lol

Can anyone clarify if the coloring on the butt of a barred rock may tell the sex? I have 5 baby's and 4 of them have a very light colored round spot and one is almost entirely charcoal gray except for the spot on its head. The gentleman we got them from said that the best he could tell was that the 4 like ones were female and the other was a roo. But the odd ball one had the only very distinct round spot on its head. We wanted 4 hens and a roo, but I'm afraid we may have just the opposite. Yikes

I don't know of a way to tell by their butt color, but the defined white dot follows the sex rule for barreds as it being a male. If the others have a less defined dot on the head, you are likely good!! Can you post pics?

I am at work but I'll see if my misses can get some good pics and send to me. The 4 like ones have the black wash down their legs that stop at the toes and the odd ball has the black wash that goes all the way down his toes. I just read somewhere on here that the defined spot meant female. Maybe I misread. We are completely new to chickens but are overly excited to start this journey with our new combined family with our 3 children between us and I would hate to have to get rid of babies that the kids have gotten attached to. They are only 6 days old but you know how kids are. Lol. Thanks so much!
