At what age can you start telling boys from girls with hatchery Sussex chicks?

We have 9 chicks, that are 4 weeks old right now, and at this point, I have no idea. lol

Well, the only way you can determine for sure what gender they are is when they start to crow or lay an egg, but it is easier to sex the older they get.

I think this lecture describes how to sex SS chicks by chick down color. Falkenstein was the person who lead the SS from a cinnamon-colored base color ( as seen on this 1890 trading card: http://tinyurl.com/c5wfek5 )
to the rich, deep mahogany base color (as seen on this 1931 trading card: http://tinyurl.com/a6vanrs )
we see today in our well-bred SS birds.

Hi,
I found this on another thread about sexing Speckled Sussex chicks: " roo is on the lower left with more blurring of the chipmunk stripe and the reddish head. Females had sharp edges to their stripes. Hope this helps!". This is interesting because it was also found to be true in "chipmunk" colored chicks in the Marans breed.
The females also had much sharper definition of their head stripe.
