Sexlinked genes?

Can anyone explain sexlinked genes to me? I do know it has to do with brown and black. I have a male Khaki Campbell and a female black runner would I be able to tell the sex of their ducklings? If not which ducks would I need to breed together to get ducklings that are sexable by color? I also have a chocolate female muscovy and two black male muscovy. Since my chocolate is a female does that mean it's not possible to make color sexable ducklings from them?

Yes. Genotypically, a khaki campbell is dusky chocolate mallard. So the chocolate is there. Chocolate is sex linked recessive. Being that it's recessive, usually it takes two copies to express. However, it's linked to the Z chromosome, meaning a female can only ever get one copy of it, so when a female gets a single copy, she is chocolate.

What's going to happen is that the male is going to pass one chocolate gene to all the offspring. The females are going to express it with the one copy, making them all chocolate. The males will all be black split to chocolate.

Since my chocolate is a female does that mean it's not possible to make color sexable ducklings from them?

Correct. From this pairing all you can get are black females and black split to chocolate males.

Sorry to respond so late. (I had two eggs in the incubator and they just hatched.) Would the same sexlinked genes show up when he has kids with my Pekin? I got a brown girl which seems to be from my runner since she doesn't have malard markings and I also got a duckling with black mallard markings. I played with a duck genetics calculator and saw that their kids would either be a regular mallard or a chocolate mallard so it made me curious if my Khaki will always produce chocolate girls no matter the mother.

White in ducks is recessive and actually prevents whatever color the duck would otherwise be from happening. So technically the pekin might be chocolate 'under' the white, which would throw it off. However I'd think that's pretty unlikely, so the answer is probably, but there's a chance it might not work if the pekin does happen to be chocolate.

And yes, your khaki drake will be giving a chocolate allele to his female ducklings no matter who the mother is.

The mallard babies shouldn't be happening if the runner is black, which would be extended black, which is dominant/incompletely dominant over mallard. Unless she's actually split to mallard (e+).

Sorry I meant when I played with the Pekin and khaki that their kids would be mallard types. I could have put it in wrong though.
 
By the way, if you do end up with chocolate mallard babies, can you send me a picture? I've been looking for a picture of those, both as babies and grown, and can't find any.

Awwww I totally saw some chocolate mallard ducklings on FB or at least I think so lol I wish I would have saved the pics now! If I get any though I'll gladly send you some pics. I guess my regular colored mallard baby is a boy though then:hmm my khaki isn't exactly wonderful to my muscovys but my runner and Pekin love him so we deal with him. I hope this little guy won't be like him. I've never had a duck as hyper as the little guy though. Gosh can he bolt out of absolutely no where and it's almost like he hatched hungry! He's crazy. :idunno here are the two who hatched though, the chocolate is actually blind. I have no idea why but I've already posted about her in her own lil forum so hopefully I'll get advice and answers there.
