Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I am really not an expert at all, but I don't think so. It seems there was a provencale breed that grew extinct before there even was a standard before the war. This map shows the breeds by region for France and you can see a huge empty gap in the south east. There may be Italian breeds of closer origin than Livourne like the Bionda Piemontese, but I'm not sure they would be easy to find.
Love the map.

Rain this morning and early afternoon after which it was rather pleasant.
Last night Lima roosted with Henry and Matilda, tonight she back on the perch of the new coop.

They are not easy to find here. We don't have the variety of breeds that are found in the US as there are no hatcheries for backyard chicken keepers.
I know they breed Welsumers in Germany and in the Netherlands. Maybe @abpatchy can help you if you to buy fertilised eggs? She breeds them very successfully.

No way. People really do that?

I have seen another map of Europe (incl France ) a few years ago.. I thought there were more breeds like naked necks in this map too. I try to find it for you.

I have only seen 10 of these breeds for sale in USA hatcheries.
But the hatcheries have many more.

The forest preserves north of me, have roosters dumped all the time. There's rescues that go and catch them.
Some are ones that get loose from some religion that sacrifices them. Not sure if I believe that. The news had people on that supposedly participated in the sacrifices. The news filmed it, except for the bloodletting. Could have been just for ratings.

Years ago there was supposed to be satanic cults doing stuff, but it was kids being stupid.
It happened both where I lived and around here too. Not Satanic cults, but people dumping chickens. (Although not much surprises me these days, so I wouldn’t put it past the realm of possibility.) Apparently there’s a feral flock in one of the nearby canyons that has actually managed to live and reproduce successfully for several years. I’m impressed by that but also worried about what the impact will be on native wildlife.

People can’t bring themselves to cull their own birds, and just go dump them somewhere so a bobcat, coyote, or some other predator will do it for them. I’m appalled by it - if you keep animals of any kind, you are responsible for them. Including a quick and painless death when that day comes.
Marinated chickens! I love it.
