What was it that she saw?
I'm not sure. She was looking at a range of trees above. They are full of geays and smaller birds but dense enough that all I can see is movement. When hawks, eagles and crows come from above they usually circle just at the border of the trees.
She didn't run away after making the noise and went back to scratching in the open after a while
Funny picture of Orpingtons in one

I had an lavender English Orpington rooster, until a turkey squashed him. He was smaller than most of my meat mutts roosters.
A turkey squashed him 🙁?
It's hard to have a size of the scale of birds on photos and I have never seen an orpington for real. Are they usually bigger than brahmas ?

This makes me think it is an interaction, the way the roosters react depends on how we act toward him.
It's not only that obviously, as different roosters react differently to the same human.
My rooster that doesn't like me, Théo, has very two explicit sounds to tell me he's not happy I'm around, and it's definitely not crowing. I would describe one as an angry cackle walking away from me, and the other as a low defiant hissing sound staring at me.

Back to alarm sounds, here is a pullet Léa making a low caution growl (you may need to turn the sound up to hear)
Love it. I know the sound well. ❤️

No, Brahmas are usually larger. Maybe it’s an illusion due to molt. Plus Orpingtons are VERY fluffy. My Orpington looked almost as big as my Brahma, but she was three pounds smaller.

A friend gave me an extra rooster named Dinner. I had to keep separated from a certain Jake. They didn't like each other. One day I seen Dinner getting out. before I got to him he had found that jake and picked a fight. The turkey was tapdancing on him when I got there. They both tasted good though.

and Quenell laid her first too I think; she squeezed into the same nest box as Uppsala, and there were two tinted eggs when they left :D one 57g (U's been laying a while now) and one 51g with faint longitudinal streaks, as pullets' first eggs sometimes have. In any case, it seems she's entirely over whatever that episode earlier in the week was about :ya

recipe please! sounds scrumptious!
I finally got home to my recipe cards (I am old school with recipes).
I don't usually do 'cups' because it is such an imprecise measure - but this is a very imprecise recipe so don't get too accurate.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of dried chickpeas
- 1 cup of chopped parsley
- 1 cup of fresh cilantro
- 1 small onion chopped
- 3-4 garlic cloves
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
My notes on ingredients say:
- Go heavy on the herbs - can take another cup easily
- Can also go heavy on the spices
- Mint and dill are also good additions

To make:
- Soak chickpeas for 24 hours and then drain
- Put everything in the food processor together (it helps to roughly chop the herbs first so you don't run out of room in the food processor bowl)
- Heat oven to 400 degrees F (~205C)
- Shape mixture into balls and flatten
- Drizzle with olive oil and put in oven
- Turn over when they begin to look cooked
Sorry, I didn't note how long they took to cook - not long - maybe 30 mins? I think I tasted my way to deciding they were done! They will get crispy and dark brown on the outside and be softer and green inside.

Serve with Tahini Sauce, pickled veggies and shredded lettuce/cabbage in a pita-bread pocket.

I haven't tried making my own Tahini (which I think it would be easy), or Pita (which I think will be hard).
