Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

when i locked up the coop for the night, i saw there was a big wet splotch on the coop floor underneath her spot on the roost bar, and it had already attracted some of those dastardly fire ants.
Lima, who had similar problems is still running a bit liquid from what I saw this afternoon when I cleaned the coop. Better than yesterday though.

I hope she will be fine. She looks really cute and sweet in this picture !
People are not used to eating what grows when it grows
People who are enthusiastic when we tell them we are 97% self reliant for vegetables, are often totally put off when we explain we eat tomatoes four months a year at best 🤣.
3C and on and off sunny this afternoon.
The person who keeps the two plots closest to the chicken coops was at the allotments today without their partner. We had quite a long conversation. They won't be planting (the plant flowers not veg) until early April and even then they said if the chickens do dig something up it will make a change from the all the rest of the wildlife.:D This person has a soft spot for Fret.View attachment 3424847

Sounds like a lovely day. If the chickens are making their way through other people's hearts, then you've fulfilled your mission 💚.

Lovely sight though not sure the chickens appreciate the esthetic of the white stuff!

Quirky ? I'm not sure if her fame made it outside France : Monique, the hen that kept company to Brittany's longe range navigator Guirrec Soudée, died last week at five years old : an article on her via google translate.

So true! In the summer we are almost 100% self-reliant. The winter is difficult, although some canning & freezing makes it better, and I fortunate that my grocer has lettuce from a local greenhouse. We do cave & buy tomatoes a few times, though.

came home after a day out to find someone had left the door ajar. Discovered that at least one of the chickens had explored the house thoroughly, leaving poop in each and every room downstairs :th
Was it @Shadrach who left the door open? He doesn't mind chooks in the house.

It mainly seems to be the out of season veg that's in short supply. People are not used to eating what grows when it grows.
Yes, we have long ago gotten used to "everything all year" food. It wasn't that way when I was a kid. If it didn't grow locally at "that" time of year, you didn't eat it because you couldn't buy it. Guess I'm old.

Wow, that’s a lot of snow in March.
Weather forecasts say we have in in the south of NL too. But here it’s green. We have a little drizzling snow thats melts when it hits the ground.

Seeing this it’s clear why people in colder climates need a bigger coop as we do. Its not nice if chickens can’t/won’t go out of the coop with snow for several weeks or months in a row.

My chickens were confined to the coop and run today. For me it was a ‘work at the office day’.

Btw, if Weather forecasts expect snow for a week or two, I can put a cover over the main run. This is made with the tubes of an old party tent. And I kept the cover just in case.
