Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Dry warm and sunny.
Removed Fret and she ate a bit and went off for her bath.

She spent about 20 minutes off her nest. She ate a bit of multigrain bread soaked in kefir along with the others. Lima who is quite fussy seemed to like it.
Fret was having a preen when I looked before going on to the allotment with the others. When I next checked she was back on her nest, minus Ella's daily contribution. No more eaten eggs.

I've been busy getting the last of the large rubble and stones out of the coop run. I also barrowed five lots of soil from the compost heap to the plot and got that mixed in.
I was donated a couple of tomato plants which I am going to try and grow on the plot rather than in bags or in the greenhouse. I'm not optomistic but one never knows.

Around the fruit bushes is the favourite spot currently. Henry managed to pick a hole that wasn't supporting anything I had planted. The soil is slightly damp and he was happy sitting there while the hens picked around the bushes.

I've got family stuff to do over the nest three days, none of it good so I may not get home to post. I will read and comment but posting pictures and anything much else on a mobile phone isn't for me at the best of times. I'll catch up with the pics later.
I'll probably miss one day at the allotments but my eldest is covering that.

Di you want to bet for a bottle of whiskey that stripe will turn into a rooster if he gets the chance?
I'm pretty sure Stripe is a rooster. So I'm not going to bet against my feeling. He's absolutely huge compared to Primo and Cafecita. And I plan on keeping him!

Stripe on the right. Cafecita front and center and Primo grazing a shrub back left

Hi folks, if you have a moment, please say a prayer or send some good energy to our beautiful and intrepid lead hen Cleo today. My partner Juan and I will be executing another surgery this afternoon to try and extract more of her bumblefoot infection, which has progressed to the top of the foot. We've cleaned as much as possible from the bottom foot pad but there's a big kernel in between the toes and we'll need to lance the foot from the top as well. The muscles and tendons of the leg still work but we need to get this out before it progresses further, and quickly. I've been soaking her for the past two days in warm Epsom salts and applying drawing salve and tumeric paste to bring the infection to the surface and today's the day. She is barely hobbling around and I know it pains her physically and energetically not to be out there supervising the juniors. It's definitely more chaotic out there without her influence. Thanks all and have a good day.

Hope it will work out not so bad as you are expecting.
Will be in suburban hell. Taking them for a walk will be a way to get them some exercise. Having them on a leash will help me keep them safe.
Are you having misgivings about bringing them over there ? You sound so unhappy about it 😟.
Would you not eventually consider rehoming them close to you once you're settled ?

Sending good thoughts for her, and for you and your partner throughout the surgery.
