Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

It is just very, very hard. One has to put oneself in the shoes of someone else. That is almost impossible within the same species, but across species is even worse.
My attitude to these things has changed a lot as I cared for each of my parents until they died and as I myself get older.
My Dad in particular taught me a lot about the mindset of someone approaching death and how joy can be found in small things.
I observe the same in the hens I have lost and a couple of the cats too.
I have stopped thinking in terms of 'a deficit from normal' and more in terms of absolute suffering - which is mainly pain.
Following MJ’s lead I am posting tax for the non-chicken post.

How are the chickens at your house these days RC?
So far so good. They seem pretty integrated but don’t yet roost together.
I am still waiting for the results from the lab that is looking at the tumor that killed Eli. I assume Marek’s and am still absorbing the implications of that. Everyone except Babs is vaccinated but that isn’t a guarantee so I worry.
Meanwhile the last 48 hours have been thunder storms of biblical proportions. The windows are rattling and the cats are hiding under the bed. I have half a mind to join them.
I peeked on the coop cameras to see how the Princesses were coping and they didn’t seem scared at all. Though I did notice that they stayed closer together than normal. Here they are - Sylvie is watching the rain.

Somebody/thing has demolished my one and only brussel sprout plant
2 days ago I witnessed 3 tree sparrows eating my last young purple orache - before seeing them at it I'd assumed slugs or caterpillers were responsible. Is it too late to sow more brussels? I'm going to sow more orache today - the weather's forecast to change so it might work.

Sounds like two nail-biting situations at once :hugs

We would spend our whole lives drunk!
I have been catching up. Glad we go back to normal after all the sadness.
A bit too early for a drink 🥃.

Tax to make everyone happier.
The two mama’s, not death but dustbathing.

Some of the chicks before they escape to free range.

One of the escape artists followed the mamma’s over the rabbit fence. Name: Silver (silver partridge Dutch)

Good news: I didn’t see any red mites, 8 days after discovering and two clean ups.

Stupid news: Katrientje is broody and very persistent (annoying). Told her she wont get fertilised eggs cause there are too many chicks as it is.

Sad news. The chickens residence is getting to small. I put a few adds on our ‘marktplaats.nl’ last week.

Brussels sprouts are a fall crop and have the best flavor when harvested after a frost. You should have plenty of time to plant again by July....
