Two and a half hours today. 10C with light rain on and off.
It looks like Carbon has decided she'll lay an egg. She used to lay greenish eggs.
When she stopped laying back in October last year her eggs had turned the pinkish colour you can see in the picture. It's a bit long but it is her first egg after the winter break. They should get rounder as she gets into the swing of it.
Mow had pulled a muscle or rolled a tendon. She doesn't limp but she does stretch her leg out every few steps when foraging.

Get better soon, Mow! Maybe she got it while beating a speedy retreat away from Dig's Valentine's Day advances, which are unfortunately not restricted to Valentine's Day

It looks like Carbon has decided she'll lay an egg

I had a first 2024 today. Probably Kraai laid this egg because she was squatting for me for me lately.
The egg was very muddy thanks to the rain that never seems to stop for more than a day.

The egg on the left is from a ‘neighbour’. She sells big blue Sussex hens if they lay more than her family can eat. The one on the right is probably of my speckled Dutch bantam.

Whenever I see the differences of my own eggs compared to ‘large or normal’ eggs , it reminds me of a rhyme we have in the Netherlands:
‘Een ei is geen ei, twee ei is een half ei, drie ei is een paasei.’
Translated:
One egg is no egg.
Two egg is half an egg
Three egg is an easter egg.

The origin goes back a long way in history in the time when boys went to pick eggs in the neighborhood. They hit the ground with their Easter sticks to show that they were getting there. They went by the doors to pick up eggs and rather money. They were not satisfied with one egg and neither were they satisfied with two eggs. The money or the proceeds of the eggs were then brought to the pastor. If people don't open, the boys often threw the eggs they just picked up against the door out of anger.

Writers comment: What an ingratitude! They just should have let the girls hop through the streets and sing.

'One egg makes us happy, two eggs make us super happy and with three eggs we are ultra happy!'

Do you hear it too? Even the grammatical curvation is fine to do, when the message is positive!

Either Cruella or Ursula has started laying. The place where the egg was laid, as well as the size, has me thinking Ursula. Cruella does have the more red wattles out of the two, but Ursula has never been one to have a very red comb. I also saw Cruella's adoptive daughter in the nest. When I did egg collection I found a cream egg in there. Never had one of those before. If it is indeed a first egg, it's a very nice one. It would also make her one of my best Tsouloufates

Day off today. Spent a couple of hours watching Tucker Carlson's interview with Vladimire Putin.
I had a vegetarian round for dinner. I've almost used up the fava beans and the mixed lentils and beans I got for the chickens. I might even buy some more!
I made this replacing the mixed beans with fermented peas/grains/beans mix
and using fresh corriander rather than powder. Serve on rice. It tasted pretty good.

Mind you, I guess the way over the top cake from the Polish bakery down the road wiped out the healthy eating grains and stuff.

I responded to a thread about roosters this morning, and a little while later Skomer and Fforest coincidentally put on a pertinent display in front of me: 1st photo Skomer (toy boy), 2nd photo, a second or two later, Fforest (his dad)

Fforest may have chased junior off, but Uppsala (who's from the same clutch as Fforest) didn't then let him mate her; she was happy with the service she'd already received
