Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Chicks were out again when I arrived.
I'm surprised the fox hasn't been around when they are out.
Although I had a bunch of 5 weeks old that slipped out and I seen a coyote go by. I ran out and they were in the weeds 3 ft away from where I seen it go by. Not sure if they were really quite or if it was worried about me.

I've only had chickens for a few years. I am just now seeing one of my older broody hens (she is sitting on eggs) come off her nest, see the two chicks with another hen, then run over and attack the chicks. No blood or death yet as I intervene. I am concerned. Hope she will chill when her chicks hatch.
I would separate the 2 broodies. If possible give the broody with the chicks a new, safe place to stay. How old are the chicks.?

A few days after the eggs of the other hen hatched you probably can put them together again.

an empty cat food tin nailed to a broom handle
that's another great idea; however, not having a cat means not having a cat food tin :p otoh, I can get one easily from the next-door neighbour :)
I keep one of these in the coop.
I've got one of those, but I can't imagine it working in the chaotic structure inside the hedge. I had to cut away a few stems just to get a view of the nest below. There's no headroom above.

Fez hatched all 6! Tempted her off the nest with a breakfast of mealworms + weetabix moistened to a crumble with ff liquor. She had the smelliest poop imaginable - glad I was there to clear that away pronto 💩

I'm guessing already that the light chick on the right is a boy: Always at the front, bold as brass. I guess he'll be Sully. The rest, in no particular order, will be Aberglasny, Cadoc, Erddig, Gilfach and Nefyn (as ACEGN and S are the available letters at the mo ) In case you can't see it, the sixth chick is just visible behind her butt.

In Cruella's first (adopted) batch, she had a chick just like this. Said chick would fight mum by week one; come week two, it needed serious reprimanding. I was convinced it was a cockerel.

Ended up being a pullet, and once again I was proven the dumb one :p
