Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I knew there was huge profit in pet food
This, along with inconsistencies in the feed supply in my area (feed stores, retailers, etc.. do not seem to care about the quality of chicken feed, just that you "fill them up."..) has inspired us to start trying to grow stuff to make at least some of our own feed. I have a heritage variety of aramanth seeds coming today! I am going to find a variety of hard wheat, barley and milo that will grow here too. I probably do not have enough land to grow all their food for the year, but I can, at least, supplement.

One of the dogs is on RC (the brand), per two different vet's recommendations. It's a specific recipe for his gastrointestinal issues. He has problems with all other foods I've tried. As far as I'm aware, only RC, Purina and Hill's have this recipe. He's only done well on the RC, so that's what I'll keep doing for him. For future dogs, I have looked at raw diets, but I need to do more research on the topic
We don't do raw..but we feed our dogs roasted chicken or turkey, with peas rice, scrambled eggs, etc. They love it, not just the food, but they love to watch the process of our cooking and prepping their meals.

amaranth is one of the things I scattered about but it didn't work here; either it didn't like the conditions, or it got eaten to destruction :gig Good luck with your experiments. The local weeds and grasses of course grow well, however, absent lab analysis, I have no idea what the nutritional profiles are. Instead, I trust the chickens' instincts and foster as much plant diversity as I can.

Another ethical question
Thoughts on dispatching mice by drowning?
I was watching this and they mentioned some countries it's illegal to drown mice.

I drown things in traps that I need to get rid of and move too fast or too small to shoot. I don't believe in giving my problem to someone else to take care of.
I don't think I could drown anything. I just feel that every animal deserves to be dispatched humanely, if it needs to be done, but I also know, rodents can do a lot of damage.

Ours are super fussy. There is a lot of feed they won't touch, especially anything with pellets, so I have to do something to make sure they are getting what they will eat.

I ordered the Hopi variety, so it should tolerate our heat and drought like conditions. We are going to rota-till a big patch and sow the seeds, the string tins around the area with fishing line to discourage wild foraging. The bloody geese ate all of our corn, so we are going to do the same when we replant that.

We also ordered giant heritage sunflowers that I am really excited about, not only pretty and natural shade, but the seeds can be added to their feed and saved to grow more.

I have noticed that the chickens are eating less of their feed with the extra vegetation and bugs that they have access to now and they just love the foraging activities. The weeds that they don't touch, we dig up and remove them. We have all sorts of new weeds and plants popping up, I think due to the increase in migratory birds that seek sanctuary on our property, so we are being cautious.

I guess I should have added what is a humane way to dispatch in a trap. I'm definitely open to suggestions.

It's election week. The Americans will be celebrating on the day their inependance from what was called Great Britain. Not sure they've got much to celebrate to be frank. Not to worry, Rishi has plans to make the day a far more important celebration than losing a colony, or two.:p

He and his mates will be touring what's left of Great Britain singing this song.

Meanwhile in the real world.

Meanwhile some of us may be concerned with this question.

Just thought I would cheer you all up while you look for ethical pet food; not chicken flavoured of course. We wouldn't buy that would we.:p
What about this guy?
