Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Rhondda came for breakfast today, and was off for at least 30 minutes. She seemed to be in good shape. Then I saw her again at 9.15, so went to investigate; her nest has been discovered. Only one egg remains, with some shell of 1 or 2 others, the rest are just gone. I’m guessing rats or other rodent. So it turns out that it was not a good enough site; but she’s safe, and that’s what is important, and hopefully she's learned an important lesson. I'll be relieved when she comes back to the coops to roost and lay.

I knew there was huge profit in pet food, but a news item today still surprised me: "Mars is at the center of this surge. While perhaps most associated with its myriad brands aimed at humans, from M&Ms and Wrigley’s gum to Dolmio cooking sauce, the sprawling conglomerate – one of the largest private companies in the world – now generates more money from its animal-focused businesses than those aimed at people." All their UPF knowledge and experience must be useful for the pet treat arm in particular. Mars owns lots of vet practices too, so it can generate income also when the pet needs dental work and gets ill. Win-win for them, as their profits and growth show. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/jun/29/mars-pet-care-food-businesses

It's election week. The Americans will be celebrating on the day their inependance from what was called Great Britain. Not sure they've got much to celebrate to be frank. Not to worry, Rishi has plans to make the day a far more important celebration than losing a colony, or two.:p

He and his mates will be touring what's left of Great Britain singing this song.

Meanwhile in the real world.

Meanwhile some of us may be concerned with this question.

Just thought I would cheer you all up while you look for ethical pet food; not chicken flavoured of course. We wouldn't buy that would we.:p

Well that's a rabbit hole I hadn't been down before .
I feed diamond naturals and they are family own...at least for now.

There's a low cost spay clinic in our town. I trap feral cats and the clinic neuters them for a nominal price. They recently closed because they cannot find a vet to do surgeries. While speaking to a volunteer about the situation she explained that local vets used to donate their time to do surgeries for the nonprofits, but the practices have since been purchased by companies that don't allow the vets to do volunteer work! That would also explain why prices have been jacked up.

Another ethical question
Thoughts on dispatching mice by drowning?
I was watching this and they mentioned some countries it's illegal to drown mice.

I drown things in traps that I need to get rid of and move too fast or too small to shoot. I don't believe in giving my problem to someone else to take care of.

I understand your position. Personally I don't like the idea of drowning animals. I worked in a restaurant that developed a mouse problem. Instead of dropping it in a bucket of water as directed I put on a glove to hold a mouse that was caught alive, and I hit it on the head with a hammer. It was instant, and the mouse didn't die a prolonged drowning death while the employees watched! I also don't kill sick/dying tropical fish by freezing them (!!!) or flushing them down the toilet/loo as some do. I do it as quickly as possible, taking responsibility myself to do it right. And I always feel sad.

And I always feel sad.
Yes I feel sad for a lot of the animals....
My parents had a fire in their basement. My dad got it out before The volunteer fire department got there. FD said it was started by a mouse chewing the cord on the freezer. A shirt had fallen on the cord making a nice place for a mouse.
The mouse was the only life lost and the freezer, several windows along with smoke damage. If they hadn't woken up could have been a tragedy. This was before smoke detector were common.

One of my neighbour cats comes into the run every day (if open) to eat from the chick(en) feed.

The cat in question when he was a bit younger.

The neighbours don’t like it. I just wonder if it’s more unhealthy than the cat food?

One of the dogs is on RC (the brand), per two different vet's recommendations. It's a specific recipe for his gastrointestinal issues. He has problems with all other foods I've tried. As far as I'm aware, only RC, Purina and Hill's have this recipe. He's only done well on the RC, so that's what I'll keep doing for him. For future dogs, I have looked at raw diets, but I need to do more research on the topic
