Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

There's a low cost spay clinic in our town. I trap feral cats and the clinic neuters them for a nominal price. They recently closed because they cannot find a vet to do surgeries. While speaking to a volunteer about the situation she explained that local vets used to donate their time to do surgeries for the nonprofits, but the practices have since been purchased by companies that don't allow the vets to do volunteer work! That would also explain why prices have been jacked up.
Corporations ruin everything.

I guess I should have added what is a humane way to dispatch in a trap. I'm definitely open to suggestions.
LOL It is me, not you. I am not judging, just saying, drowning freaks me out. We don't do traps, we just do everything we can to deter them, or discourage their presence. I am just weak for animals and kids..LOL

I have a second baby goose rescue, the Egg Thief found it in the field this morning, abandoned, it is one of the others from the single surviving parent that produced Toots. I am fighting to keep it alive, pushing liquids with nutri-drench, because I just can't let it die without a fight. We will probably never harvest any of our chickens or turkeys..lol I will just go broke feeding them all. :idunno

Hoping the little quacker does well.
I have trouble harvesting pullets or hens.
Boys fighting or hormonal makes it easier to harvest.

I am struggling with Blue and Pip. Blue is still always attacking my husband, he is relentless. (he isn't as bad with me, but still does occasionally lose his cool and comes after me..) Pip is constantly trying to attack me.

Someone offered to buy them yesterday, they say for food, but offered $30 each, so we started thinking, cock fighting? Pitbull baiting??, and ended up turning them down. Why would you pay $30 for a rooster, that is not even really meaty, they haven't been raised as meat birds, they are really solid, but not a lot of what I would think is edible meat on them.. So even with them being mean to us, I couldn't just sell them off to possibly end life being tortured. I hope, with more girls, they will mellow out, because I do love the jerks.

I wouldn't sell if I thought for fighting.
But I had some Romanians wanting to buy turkeys, offering high prices if that day. I was advertising turkey eggs not adult birds. They bought 2 hens and didn't like the tom I was willing to sell. They looked the hens over for lice.
So I don't think they were looking for meat but eggs or future food.

If it's any consolation, I'd doubt it's cockfighting. It's an unsettling conversation to have, but BOs aren't exactly fighting birds. As for pittbull baiting, I again don't think it's likely, but can't completely say no

Going with your gut is the right thing to do regardless:hugs

Samuel flogging me got him on my 💩 list, and forcing himself on a broody hen put him on the "your days are numbered" list, but it took him attempting to kill chicks to push me into culling him on the spot...but it wasn't easy, and I cried.

The first one is the worst 😭
... not that it's ever easy, nor should it be easy taking a life.
