It was, indeed. In years prior some of my hens had attempted brooding but never were successful (the first year, of course, there was no cock ).

A new site almost ready for proper brooding was discovered today:

I boiled eighteen of them straightaway, and left the rest with cracks to either hatch (probably too soon for full development) or be thrown out tomorrow.

That lot beats Cheepy's record of 24. It took us a while to find her.

Got around to fixing a string guard to hopefully prevent and more rat chew throughs.

Fret has injured her foot to add to the limp she has. Looks like she's torn a toenail.

Three hours today. Warm amd dry.

I graduated two months ago. Doing commercial plumbing now.

The roosters usually kick off molting season by dropping tail feathers...in August. But the ground has been peppered with feathers for the past couple weeks already.

We had a couple of weeks of mid 90s with temps now in the mid to low to mid 80s and a few of the boys have dropped some tail feathers, most notably, Spuds big long glorious tail feather with a white streak in it. It will be interesting to see if they have a normal or light moult this fall.

This is normal weather patterns for here, we have intermittent periods of almost unbearable heat mixed in with the normal 80s, but this is the first summer with chickens of moulting ages.

We may yet see some triple digit days, but hoping not.
