Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I don't think lab grown meat is the answer.
I have my doubts too.

But I dont believe humanity is able to choose what’s good for them either. Marketing of the cheap meat sellers, UPF suppliers and GMO/poison factories is too powerful. Too many people make the wrong (unhealthy*) decisions to feed themselves. And people in governments in power to make a change are too easy to persuade (or corrupt).

*Unhealthy for their own health, the welfare of animals in factory farming and unhealthy for the planet (greenhouse gasses, pollution of soil and water)

Rain this morning some of it heavy. Reasonably dry late afternoon. The chickens head straight for the compost heap once let out. The wet weather brings the bugs to the surface.
It's been interesting to watch the chickens forage/crop preferences as the seasons go by and their nutritional requirements change as they prepare for winter and work through their moults. They've lost interest in the courgettes, less enthusiastic about the chard and some of the weeds they nibbled at earlier in the year. Bugs are the go to currently. I watched them comb the edges of a few of the plots where the grass and weeds have grown and lain over. Mow's head was completely hidden in some places as she furtled under the vegitation; just a fluffy white arse working it#s way along the edge. She had a wet head when she went to roost while the rest of her was dry.:love
Henry didn't even bother with the supplied feed initially and went straight to the area under one of the apple trees. He did come to eat later.

If people could be persuaded to eat less meat and the price of decent meat was to go up considerably it would help I beleive. I think in your youth and mine, meat was more of a once or twice a week occasion. These days it seems people expect to eat meat once or twice a day and this alone is contributing to the health problems due to diet we are now facing. I read with some disgust people on this forum writng about how they eat 12oz steaks for example. The digestive system just can't process the nutrients contained in that amount of meat. It's simple gluttony.:rant
Raising my own poultry definitely has reduced the size of my portions. Takes a month to collect eggs and Hatch then 4 months until harvest size. Turkeys are a couple months longer. And I have to take a life. Makes one think about having a second serving

That's a very good point. If I were eating my chickens I probably wouldn't eat much.

The first problem with fake meat is it is often labor and energy intensive to create.

Secondly, many people are allergic to chitin, (similar to shellfish). Considering my own allergies I would be hesitant to eat anything manufactured with insect ingredients added.

Eat crickets if you want, but please don't put them in my food.

fake meat
What fake meat ?

There are many different kind of veggie burgers/vegan alternatives for a piece of meat or minced meat.
Vegetarian means they dont contain insects and vegan alternatives are completely plant based.

The fake lab grown meat (beef) is made with genetic material from cows and is real meat grown in an artificial environment on a substrate. Its still super expensive. Not easy to upscale and uses lots of energy.

There's some companies that are selling crickets for human consumption
