Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I let them hatch so I can fill the freezer with the cockerels. I prefer the bigger birds, around 5 lbs dressed, so I don't have to take so many lives. I use a couple chickens and half a jake a month. They have a better life than the store chickens. Which I rarely have to buy.

If I was just getting eggs the smaller ones would be good.
That isn't a lot of meat over a month.
Plenty of people in the UK eat half a pound of meat a day. Most I've spoken to don't even realise they are eating that much; a couple of sausages and a rasher of bacon at breakfast, chicken oie lunch, a modest piece of steak in the evenings...
I was on the low side of meat consumption but it was still a shock how much meat I ate in a week; hence me eating chicken food.:p
I had half a chicken breast for supper this evening, traced organic, daytime free range, the new open barn style of accomodation on a small scale. It doesn't taste the same as the chickens I've raised. The chickens in Catalonia tended to have darker meat and of course a lot less of it compared to even free range broilers.

I have 4 cans of salmon or tuna and a lb of beef or pork a month too. But I used to eat close to a half lb of beef or pork some days.

Strange to find so many people in this thread who like to give their chickens healthy food and discuss about what is good and what not for them. And in the meanwhile the people themselves have very unhealthy habits.

The advice is my country from the national organisation ’Voedingscentrum’ is to eat 70-80 grams of meat (or vegetarian equivalents) a day for a healthy lifestyle.

https://mobiel.voedingscentrum.nl/encyclopedie/vlees.aspx,
Translated txt from their site: For a sustainable and healthy diet, we recommend eating no more than 500 grams of meat per week, including a maximum of 300 grams of red meat. It is not necessary to eat meat, you can replace it with other products. +
Eating a lot of red and especially processed meat such as meat products is associated with stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer.

Other claims on the internet with higher meat consumption advice, is often paid by the meat industry.

shocked this morning to find Quincy standing by the coops waiting for me to let everyone else out  I wonder where she spent the night. I'll have to keep a closer eye on that one at lock up.
Nowadays I have to lock in the chickens before 16.30 or the Amrock family, starts to find a spot to roost outside their coop/run.

Last week when I was too late, I managed to pick up the 3 ladies, but Whiskey got out of reach and he slept outside, on top of the ivy hedge/fence. Directly behind the run.

Strange :if the Amrock family manages to roost outside, it’s Black + the 3 juveniles. I always find these 4 on the run above the door.
If Im on time to lock the chickens in the coop/runs, the 3 juveniles + (often) Ini mini sleep in the playhouse.

Umm that's not much meat.
I have to watch the carbohydrates . My glucose goes up with more than a half cup of beans, rice or fruit a day. . I grow low glycemic potatoes so I have those too. I eat a lot of broccoli, cauliflower and carrots . ETA onions and garlic too

Pressure cook the beans & rice, then store them in the fridge overnight. This changes the carbs from simple to complex. Just reheat and serve. This is how we do it, and we eat beans and/or rice 2-3 times a day.

I have heard this happens to potatoes too. My glucose went up some but not as much as with fresh cooked regular potatoes. The low glycemic I grow raised it less.
