My hen Runty is 3.5 years old and hasn't been laying for a while. I thought it was the stress of a rooster that didn't like her. He went to a new home and she's in charge again. She's been breathing much faster than normal for about a month and I took her to the vet a little over a week ago and completed 7 days, 2x a day of Enroflaxacin for what the vet thought was egg yolk peretenitis. She seemed slightly better but 2 days later she looked sick again, hunched over closed eyes. I brought her in the house and gave her an Epson salt bath, but she doesnt seem like she's any better. I dont know what else this could be or how to help her. I never saw egg looking droppings like many of the blogs said. She does have poultry fleas that I discovered during this process and have been trying to get rid of them, but its hard to imagine that she's this sick from that. Does anyone have any ideas?

External parasites can reduce blood volume and cause a chicken to become very sick, so you do need to find a way to treat that. Permethrin poultry dusting powder is safe, non-toxic and effective.

Did your vet take any X-rays? This hen may have reproductive tumors and not a reproductive infection. Imaging can help determine what's going on in her oviduct.

I've treated all of the chickens twice with Manna Pro Poultry Protector for the fleas. They aren't completely gone though.
The vet didnt do any imaging. She does seem to be very swollen in her abdomen. If she does have tumors and thats potentially the issue, do you k ow if there's any way to treat that?

Are you sure you are dealing with fleas, and not lice or mites?

Permethrin products, or Elector PSP are much more effective in getting rid of them, and it can take at least 3 treatments at weekly intervals to get them. You also need to clean out and treat your coop, removing and discarding all bedding and nesting material, and replace with fresh.
A bloated abdomen can be a reproductive cancer, a reproductive infection, or fluid from organs that are failing (which can accompany cancer or infection). Reproductive problems, including cancers, are not uncommon in laying hens over the age of 2. Sometimes treatments like antibiotics might buy them some time, but usually treatments are only palliative and don't really bring a cure. As previously said, imaging might show if she does have cancer or infection.

Sorry yes poultry lice, not fleas. Im also looking into to whether this could be cocciodosis. We brought three new pullets into the flock about 1.5 months ago and im wondering if they could have introduced a new type of parasite? That coupled with lice could have made it hard for her to fight off?
