Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

You guys have got me worried. I have never taken any supplements. Well I often do Vitamin C & zinc when a cold starts. You all seem like healthy eaters - why the need for extra?
Genuine question - worried I should be taking stuff!
For most people who eat a balanced diet and get some exercise daily there should be absolutely no need to take any supplements and if they do take any then it is worth taking a proper supplement rather than the stuff the supermarkets sell.
Most of these health things like organic food and food supplements are not going to make the slightest difference to your health but will empty your pockets rather quickly.
Extra vitamin C may help combat the winter bugs, at least the recovering from them.
I take the one pill for the vitamin D boost mainly. The cod liver oil is a habit from childhood.
If one has a particular health concern then the right supplement may help but otherwise what most of these health additives/products are designed to empty the pockets of people who don't have a decent grasp on nutrition.

In that case I will hold on to my pennies for now!

I am. The multi vitamin I take (in the link above) has less than the recommended daily amount of vitamin K; for what that recommendation is worth. I consulted a doctor and a pharmacist before buying the supplement I take and it's a short term boost to try and bring my vitamin D level up to strength. I bought the best qualityI could find and take half the dose the manufactureres recommend.
Pleased to read that my cod liver oil habit is on the green list.

Yes. I noticed that too. I might even consider developing a habit for that, but as I eat fish maybe 4-5 days a week I could probably hold off.

There is so much nonsense written about diets it make some politicians look honest. If one is concerend about the state of ones immune system then get a blood test and go from there. Necking every fad pill or dieting recommendation from organics to flat out poisons is not going to make anyone healthier.
Given we don't have the education nor common sense to regulate our own diets one can't help wondering how we can believe we know how to feed chickens properly.

Well this is why I asked on here because I was surprised you and others on this thread specifically were taking supplements.

It's my first time, honest.:p I need extra vitamin C because I'm a smoker and as we all know, vitamin C isn't stored in the body and the half life is pretty short, a couple of hours or so. There is some evidence that a regular low level intake may help.
The vitamin pills are a short term solution to a badly battered imune system due to long Covid, shingles, flu, colds and all the rest of the orrible little bugs that have decided to make life more difficult. I managed 67 years without any of the "health food" additions and in a month or so, I won't be taking anything bar the cod liver oil.
