Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I woke up this morning and checked my mobile phone to read my eldest morning greeting (she sends one every day and if don't answer she'll be round demanding to know why) and to check for any reporeted damage at the field.
What greeted me was a government weather warning splashed all over my phone. I can see what the weather is like ffs! Check the Met Office forcast for chicken time and it's got red alerts, amber alerts and yellow alerts.
Could we please go back to plain old weather forcasts without all the drama!
The newspapers are the same; more some hacks opinion than reporting the news on most topics.
Yes, I'm having a rant.:p

Whisky is leaving today at 4 pm CEST. To a ‘All inclusive’ full free range arrangement in the country. With 4 adult hens who lost their male mate recently. The lady thinks they mis a man. But I suppose the hens are grieving over their known flock mate/companion.

The rubber mat is there to cover a spot where we don’t want a sand bath.
Whisky is a very handsome rooster.

It's my first time, honest.:p I need extra vitamin C because I'm a smoker and as we all know, vitamin C isn't stored in the body and the half life is pretty short, a couple of hours or so. There is some evidence that a regular low level intake may help.
The vitamin pills are a short term solution to a badly battered imune system due to long Covid, shingles, flu, colds and all the rest of the orrible little bugs that have decided to make life more difficult. I managed 67 years without any of the "health food" additions and in a month or so, I won't be taking anything bar the cod liver oil.
Makes total sense. And I really wasn’t accusing you or anyone of anything!
You are only a little older than me and I am conscious that as I age I may need more support to keep me ticking over.
At least for now though I think I will continue my strategy of enjoying a varied diet rather than taking supplements.

Erm, being outside doesn't help with vitamin D unless the sun is shining at a particular intensity and in the UK this only happens during the summer months, assuming the sun shines at some point.
Your skin produces vitamin D when you are outside and sunlight (UV-B rays) hits your skin. Even when it is cloudy during the day. Only the intensity of UV rays is a lot less. And you need to unpack yourself a bit for some naked skin in winter.

Between 11:00 and 15:00 the UV rays are strongest. The season, the time of day and the geographical location also affect the light intensity.

I'll tell the police this when I get arrested for being naked in the field mid winter.:D

YOU can unpack yourself in your mild Dutch winters! :lau

Expecting another 15 cm snow today/tomorrow.

My D level had been low, enough that the Doc's office thought it should be retested. I blew that off.

When I fell and broke my wrist the next fall, I had a bit of an epiphany. Ah, maybe they were right. Especially when it took nearly a year to get the function back in my right hand.

I've always had low D, and started taking a vitamin D supplement about 8 months ago. This past summer's blood work at my physical showed that that has helped: my level is smack in the middle of the desired range.

Michigan doesn't get much sunlight in the winter. It is grey, gloomy, dark, and cold.

I do take supplements. I can afford to have "expensive urine," if they do nothing. The B has helped with some nerve issues, I think. I've heard only good things about fish oil (I almost never eat fish), I have thinning bones, so I will continue with the calcium. The rest? If it's just a false sense of security, at least it'll help keep my blood pressure lower from not worrying.

You don’t want to ‘not know’ if there is a chance something will happen like in the Valencia area. Better be safe than sorry.

So many warnings as you describe is ridiculous. Isn’t the amber alert for missing children. Sure they don't fall from the sky.
