Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I saw it. @CCsGarden (my sister) got some photos. I was too sleepy to care much about pictures.
Yes, here is one photo.

It was so windy and dusty I could not get any clear photos .

I’d imagine more daytime predator attacks happen during the cooler months.
Here it rare to get an attack after Dec 1st and before April. This year was the first time. One canine and one hawk a month apart.
Most of the time it's when the predators have young to feed and then when the juvenile are learning.

Have you ever thought about buying a automatic pop door? It gives you the opportunity to go away from home and don’t have to worry if you get back in time.
We decided against it for a couple of reasons.

1. I like that time for checking everyone, everyday.

2. Since we have the chickens and turkeys, we won't travel. I had no choice back in February, but the Egg Thief stayed behind to care for the birds, in addition to everything else I had to deal with, luckily my eldest boy went with me, I felt better knowing he was there. I missed them and still worried and he gave me a check-list of everything he did, morning, noon and night. (LOL)

3. I don't trust anyone to take care of them the way we do. Even my son. He is great with the dogs, but anything more than one or 2 evenings when we went to that music festival, I worry. They aren't just chickens and turkeys, they are part of the family.

We are content here on our little bit of land (not that I wouldn't like 100 mostly wooded acres..), with occasional incursion (1 or 2 times a month.) into town for a few groceries and chicken supplies that we can't get delivered. We both prefer our own cooking, I have never been a shopper, we have lost interest in going to a pub/bar, if we were in the U.K. it might be different, if we could just walk into town or a lovely village, we would have to drive where we live, so what is the point. LOL and our pubs/bars lack character and our beer and whiskeys (mostly blended :sick.) are not even good, and we like our own company best. I would be the pub bore these days because all I really care to discuss are chickens, turkeys and the dogs. LOL

My theory is that humans are supposed to take a nap around noonday, and that humans should not be up for 12 continuous hours.
I actually start work an hour early so I can take a full hour lunch in the mid-day, that I use for napping, when I can. Some days the birds will make a funny noise or one of the dogs decides it is time for a noisy bath and I am wide awake.

I always said that naps are proof that grownups are smarter than little kids - they’re always trying to give them up, while we’re always trying to work one in! 😴

My friend is letting me borrow a hen to keep with Mr. Marble the polish roo. He's already so much happier. No crows today, but he showed her around and even offered a couple nesting spots. I think he was depressed having to leave his old flock, even though he was the bottom rooster.
She seems to be pondering what exactly is going on with those head feathers!
