Have you ever thought about buying a automatic pop door? It gives you the opportunity to go away from home and don’t have to worry if you get back in time.We only close the coops,after dark, because I can't imagine anything worse, than them being happily snoozing away and having a predator get in to the coop and being eaten alive.

I have observed that too about the timing and it makes no sense to my dull brain - that is also when the predators are most active too.
I guess the predators are most active at those times because that is when the chickens like to forage.
