Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I want to respond. My life long partner (44 years) passed away in January. I am not interested in another partner at this time, am not looking for one, and would not be pleased with the government, or anyone, playing matchmaker. No thanks.

Everyone, everything handles grief and loss differently. For several weeks after Ron died people were very concerned, kept asking me how I was doing. My response was "I'm doing okay, thanks, just miss him". I suspect Fret and the rest feel about the same.
Sorry for your loss.

In this particular discussion it's important not to confuse dress code with the emotional response of either chickens or people. Sure, people wear black at funerals whether they mourn the loss or not. Some of those wearing black might well be delighted at the death...
Cue the classic English murder mysteries where the family gathers post-funeral in the solicitor's office for the Reading of the Will.

I’d fallen behind (~10 pages) on this thread, and screamed aloud today when I saw this post. I’m deeply sorry for the loss of Henry (what a hero!) and proud of the hens for carrying on.
Thank you, @Shadrach for all you have done.
:hit:hugs
Yeah I try to not let myself get emotionally involved with my meat mutts. But somehow I am more involved with shadrocks chickens.

And in some or many things ( :idunno) humans are different from chickens. A rooster in the flock is not a partner for all hens in the flock.
True, but neither as a man with a harem or multiple wives.:D

I'm considering the options. If I was to introduce another male to the group I would do it by hatching eggs for the next broody.
I have to consider there will come a point when I can no longer care for the chickens and rehoming a family group of hens is a lot easier than it would be with a male.

Dry, sunny and warm. Two and a half hours today.
I'm managing to sell most of the eggs.
My current plan is to give up my plot and make some improvements to the run between the chicken run and the goose run. In all the pictures below that is where the chickens are. I'm putting up a proper. albeit lightweight fence along the front and back, partly to prevent the chickens getting onto the field and partly to prevent a sudden fox or dog attack while the are out of the coop run. This will hopefully mean that J and the eldest and the group treasurer can let the chickens onto this area and get on with other things on the field without having to woory about the chickens roaming onto a plot in the growing season, or wandering off to somewhere where whoever is supervising can't easily find them.
I'm also retreating into this area and plan to grow some produce, keep a compost heap and grow some bushes, fruit and cover.

Where is your current plot, in relation to the coop and the proposed new plot? Will the hens still be able to roam freely through the entire area while you're there?

I love the photos (some today, but especially yesterday, where they have created little tunnel trails through the tall grasses and plants; just a little chicken maze where they can chicken. ❤️
