Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I got a weird egg with a tail today; this is a first for me. The soft shell was also weirdly tough enough to survive landing on the upstand of a poop tray beneath without splitting (hence the impact dent lines across it).

I do think something's working through the flock; I'm getting soft shelled, no shelled, a fairy egg yesterday, this today, some rough surfaces and some unusual (for the hen concerned) egg shell colouring (as @BDutch mentioned going on with her older girls too). Some are sometimes hanging about in the coops or even nest-boxes, which is very unusual here.
You are still feeding your home mix of fermented grains, right? If yes, that would seem to eliminate a change in commercial feeds. With the disruption to you lovely garden, I wonder if something were eating is now gone or if something that they didn't eat before, was dug up or imported with your new soil.

That is a possibility, though there have been some weird leg and feet issues for some months now. I was thinking viral arthritis, but now wondering if a more general viral infection is in play. Most birds are absolutely fine, but those who are not are concerning me now.

Everybody out!

They both look terrific. If you are lucky, as I have been, they will both be able to look after the flock and procreate within it (as the hens see fit :D)

Thank you, Perris. I’d be very grateful to have these two boys work together and with the hens, much like your gorgeous males.

Your post the other day where you mentioned the roosters working together as a land predator deterrent made a lot of sense (and apologies for not replying more in-depth, but I read your post just minutes after finding Kolovos in terrible condition). I guess working with two large males is better than one, or none. Ideally, a mature rooster would be of great help.

Big Red comes to mind (who has taken on large dogs in the past), but we’ve already established that I don’t make great decisions, so it’d probably be best not to mess with the group dynamics any more than they already are

Rooster appreciation post! Galloping Gertie decided to go visit the turkeys... All the boys, (rooster and turkey) started sounding the alarm, one of the turkey hens was on a mission to catch and kill Gertie. We went running out, and Spud forced his way under the turkey fence, got Gertie into the enclosed turkey roost and chased off the turkeys and kept her safe until we got there. He is uninjured, Gertie is uninjured and Spud continues to prove that he is the bestest boy!

(I however am stupid. I went in to the roost to retrieve Gertie, and was exiting, checking her over and cuddling her and lecturing her about trusting the devious turkey girls, I went to step over the highest roost, caught my toe and face-planted into the corner of a 4x4. I have a giant knot from my left eye to the top of my head, but Gertie did not get squished. The Egg Thief secured the wire between them, again... the new fence line is going to go much deeper.)
