This is Slide having a bath. She stood by the side of Henry's bath, went over to another hole and had a go herself.

It has been decided for the short term at least to carry on with what I was doing which was, dig a trench and put a skirt in it and run the rest of the chicken wire up the fence to join with the chicken wire higher up. All the weeds along the fence line will have to go. You can see what I did in the picture below and ealier in the thread. The nettles have grown back but nothing like the number before and I started weeding them out this afternoon. Very busy chickens. A lot of stuff the chickens like has developed under the nettle canopy. I had hardly taken a full grip on the nettle when they would be trying to dig around it.
It will also be better in the summer months, assuming we get any, for the chickens to be under the trees in this area.

Usually the ones sold are spayed or neutered. I have heard if they can not get bred they die, which doesn't make sense to me
Doesn't make sense to me either. I'm not into ferrets, they have that slight odor about them.

Stoats get mistaken for weasels.
Both are Family: Mustelidae

In USA we have a least weasel that can get through anything bigger than 1/2 inch. They are deadly and can kill everything.
They exist in most of Canada, upper midwest USA but not as far as New England
AND IN ALL OF EUROPE AND RUSSIA!!!!! Put in that 1/2" hardware cloth.

The weasel tries not to take on a chicken face on because their eyes are vunerable. If the chicken keeps going when a weasel has a mothfull of rear end feathers what usually happens is the weasel gets shaken off; with a lot of feathers.
Hmm, here they get into a coop at night hit the chickens on the back of the neck to drink the blood. Lose most of a flock in one go.

If you have a crocodile for a guardian, you won’t have to worry about anything coming around after a bit. Including the chickens.
Or the cat, or the dog, or the children.

Ex Batts good morning one and all!

I haven't paid my taxes for a period of time so here goes:

I don't have a rooster, so she is trying to do a job that will be useless.

Every time I collect my eggs she is in one of the nests sitting on the eggs. She puffs up to about twice her size and looks so fluffy. When i collect the eggs she chatters at me. She stays in the after I collect the eggs.

I'm sorry you lost her. And I'm surprised you didn't lose more. Stoats, as with all in the weasel family, usually take out many birds at a time.

Yes

VERY small. The only safe way to have any non solid surface in the coop is to cover it with 1/2" hardware cloth.

Ferrets are large weasels. I suspect they would be friendly with the chickens long enough to kill them all. Minks will do the same thing.
I changed my mind on reading an article. It was just a thought :)

If you have a source nearby, and want chicks, maybe get her 3-4 fertile eggs! Then mark them so you don’t pull the fertile ones

We ordered fertilized bantam eggs online from Meyer hatchery. That is how we got Mr. Bumble, Sky, and Laserbeak.

Cheepy did become an important chicken in the end. She and Oswald were responsible for a new tribe which later split into two.

The buses run clost to midnight so I should be able to get home on them during the summer.
We hardly have a bus service here anymore. 40 bus drivers walked out the other day due too being conned out of a deal made by the bus company
I don't and I don't think C does either. There is an element of doubt for the future with many people I know. They are just trying to weather one crisis after another and the long term is exactly that and doesn't really feature in the planning.
Will these chickens be rehomed if it becomes impossible for them to be cared for at this allotment. I'm so sad too know you and C are having so many difficulties :(
