Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Venka's eggs are due to hatch tomorrow... I'm on tenterhooks. Her novice surrogate incubating them (Paprika, the twice-broken-3-times-gone-broody-even-as-a-pullet Penedesenca) seems to be a natural and has stayed the course, and it's her birthday today 🍾, so she will be a real hen when they hatch tomorrow :D
I hope to read it all went well.

Well it seems multiple coops have interesting side effects 😁 I'm really surprised, I was convinced they would sleep all the times in the same coop! Does it often happen that they change or is this exceptional ?

I remember but I hadn't understood that meant they went to roost with the adults, I thought it was just during the day!

I'm not sure what I see is a baby wattle, what do you think 😁? The other thing that hints boy is that whereas the other chick the same size just behind has grown plumage gracefully all over, this one's got that teenage unkempt awkward look.

I'm not much good at sexing chickens so I won't take a guess.

I would have liked to keep him although I'm obviously already overwhelmed with Théo. My partner doesn't agree.
People like rooster around here so hopefully we can re-home him if there is just one male.
People liked roosters in Catalonia as well. I was pretty appauled by some of the anti rooster stuff I read here on BYC. Talk about a bogeyman.

Speaking from experience? 😂 I don't see any in my profile and I have had a few of my posts removed 🤦‍♀️ I'm surprised they have not booted me off the site... probably a yet . Or I have not booted myself.
I must confess I do have a few blemishes on my otherwise spotless record of tact and diplomacy. :p
I have two left that run out at some point.

So, I have a question for one and/or all. Now that the 4th of July is upon us it is time for me to pack my fuzzy creatures up and take them to the cabin in the mountains so they don't have to suffer the trauma of my neighbors blowing up the hood -Why turning neighborhoods into warlike zones and traumatizing people and pets is considered exceptable or a celebration is something I can't wrap my head around- anywho, I'm thinking of splitting my flock and keeping older/heart of flock up the mountain with me for the summer. I brought most up last summer and it was great cept now my flock is bigger... I don't have room for all comfortably so thinking of leaving at least 13 home with my husband. I'll put Beetlejuice in charge of the Lani's and may do a hatch of pure B. Brahma's when I get home.View attachment 3169242View attachment 3169243
My question is about the reintro. Last time I did this I only left 2 Buffs w/DH. It boosted confidence in the little sweeties and was a fairly seamless reintro when I brought the main/older flock back down.
My question is; am I asking for trouble splitting my flock for my 2-3 month hiatus? Should I just suck it up and build another coop so I can accommodate all assimilate buff roo on new grounds and avoid reintro drama?View attachment 3169256
I mean really; what is life without drama!:D
Do both. You'll be covered then.
