Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

If I had world enough & time one of the things I should like to do is run an all Campine flock as these are by far the scattiest girls I've ever owned. I can't see how they would manage without the calm stabalising presence of saner breeds. Ha'penny grew up under the dual tutulage of Barred Rocks, who were calm unflappable hens. Luna, present top hen, is the same; a big, calm steady hen while Ha'penny still acts like the worst kind of 20's flapper. She leads everyone into trouble. She is my most predator aware hen, a great forager, but completely nuts. I think she's hiding eggs again ~ & it's not in my yard! 🙄 I would love to see how an all Campine tribe manage when every member is completely loco.
I think if you only had campines you would notice individual personalities. Every breed seems to have the full range. You may find Ha'penny is the steady type.:D

Oh Shad! Shad! Shad! :confused:You know she's not! 🤣 Of the 6 I've had, they've all been lunatics ~ some a little less so but they've all screamed like fishwives, ran around like the Duracell bunny on steroids, laid in weird places, got into places they shouldn't, impossible to handle untill, suddenly they decide squatting is their new normal...And yes, I've noticed individual personalities. They are all mad in their own way but, they are all mad! :gig

Dry again.

I'm just trying to encourage you to try keeping just Campines...with a rooster or ten of course.:p

In the second picture of this evenings post you can see a Legbar at the left of the picture. She has an infected follicle. Not quite sure how I'm going to tackle that.

There are 4 hens with SLM one quite bad. I'm treating them with Vaseline mixed with Brulidine at the moment.
One hen who I've mentioned before looking sick is looking sick again.

The front of the new run I discovered is not going to work with mesh. This has a lot to do with the heavy gauge fencing that defines the shape not being anything like as stiff as the cattle panels used in the builds I've read.
I'm going to build a solid front using plywood. It will need to be replaceable easily because the plywood I have is not marine ply and will rot.

I am running into difficulties with that. I am finding even rural townships have rooster restrictions & if I were going to keep a rooster I'd want something like a Phoenix. Who could resist those tails? If I get enough land, say 1/2 to an acre, I could run two small tribes. I have grown very fond of my Japs & D'Uccles. At my age I probably couldn't manage more land than that. Where I am now considering, I can have a rooster if I'm a breeder, not something I've ever seriously considered. Too much science & I am so good @ science...🙄

Nah, I think you would be fine as a breeder. Sure you need the genetic science if you were to try to breed to a so called standard, but knowing the chickens and instinct and what you are breeding for is more important for healthy stock. The science can be looked up if needed.
