Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Glad I kept the birds penned, that hawk was definitely wanting them today. He swooped down in our front yard so low that he came about three feet from the ground.
Be careful. The hawk that attacked my hen on Sunday was also back yesterday morning. Even though the chickens were locked in they went into panic mode.
Here the crows warn us when birds of prey are flying around and now the hens are panicked when they see or hear the crows : they associate it with the attack.

We are having fleas biting us since yesterday , I'm thinking it probably comes from the coop. I can't see any on the chickens though, we only see them on our clothes and on our bed. The cats have been treated 10 days ago so they are probably not the culprit. I'll wait a few days till the flock feels ready to leave the coop, to treat it.

I've got to get something to treat the hens though, we used to put DT on them but apparently it's not very useful and harmful to the lungs.
It's awful how much it scratches.

Nothing but rain here and the girls are not happy

Interesting. Mine seem to speak crow and differentate when crows are just about the place (often but not every day) vs when the crows are engaging with hawks. When the latter the ladies run for cover, they ignore the former.
What is interesting (well to me at least) is that I have become more able to differentiate between the crows shouts as well - so we are all learning!

Beautiful. I love to see them, but not around my chickens.

Golden Eagles are rare to see around here, but once when I saw one swooping low by the reservoir, I swear its wingspan looked as wide as the minivan I was driving! I also saw one perched in s tree when we went river rafting, and very rarely I’d see one circling overhead when I lived way up the hill.
When I was 1st on the island I had a hawk kill as it flew under my moving car. They really are amazing aerial gymnasts.
