Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Good morning to y’all. From a happy woman! Janice is back!

She was free ranging very close to the coop. Wanted to get in for some commercial feed. My hubby gave some scratch as a reward for surviving.

I hope its safe to let them free range during the morning an early afternoon again. So far we spottet the cat only around 6 pm. And most cats do have a routine if I remember correct. I learned this from an experiment/ BBC documentary.

Treat: any foodstuffs provided by the keeper that isn't a commercially produced balanced feed.
I suppose this is a joke.
Translate this to humans. Any foodstuffs not provided by Unilever isn’t a balanced feed. :he:gig

P.s @Ribh What I have learned: a little cracked corn in winter is healthy. So is hemp seed.

This summer hasn't been kind to our place with both heat and drought, as in many other parts of the world. It is the first year we are having asian hornets and our hives were already weakened by the drought. Yesterday we made muzzles from chicken wire that are supposed to keep the hornets out and different kinds of trap. I'm not very optimistic.
In better news we have managed to keep the roe deers away. It turned out mama and baby were actually trapped and living inside our fencing. After an epic chase we got them out and up to now they haven't been back.
Some pictures to make up for the all the talk. Keen eyes may spot a pullet or two in some. This is one of the hives places.

Happy news 😁!!

Oh no, not Janice 😟. Your beautiful girl! After she went through so much to make her place in the flock. Unfortunately I don't think there's much hope either but I'm crossing my fingers.

There are special cages to catch feral cats. We used one when our cat wasn't spayed and we had all kinds of stray tomcats hanging around.
As you might have read: she back!
I don’t think the cat is feral. Real feral cats are a bit bigger. And this one looked very healthy and looked after.

If I set out a live trap for cats, I need to check several times a day. There are 4 neighbouring cat’s hanging around in our garden every day. 2 at night too. One neighbour has a 24/7 pop door for cats. They behave as if our garden is theirs too. Not so strange, bc I feed them when their owners are away on a trip/vacation ( = quit often).
And beside these 4 there are more domestic cats in the neighbourhood, I wouldn’t like to harm.

Thanks, BDutch. I'm told it helps with generating enough long term heat in winter. I've probably explained that wrong but it's why I give it in winter but not in summer.

I'm so pleased Janice is back. :hugs

can't believe a list of ingredients where the main ingredient is "some kind of grain". This could be anything ! So I guess we have better labels here because it wouldn't be possible.
I definitely believe that balanced doesn't mean good for you, the ingredients matter too. It's the debate we're having for human in France on nutriscore where some highly processed food still get an A. I saw that with my cats also...in some of the feeds perfect balance is achieved through additives and animal products are one of the last ingredient ! I think it matters to know if the first ingredient of the feed is wheat, triticale or corn.
Hmmm you've got me wondering if a more detailed profile is available on Barastoc's website.

... Apparently not. I could email them I guess.

Oh, that's such good news about Janice!

There was an experiment conducted where I live that found cats do indeed have routines and habits. My friend's two cats were participants in study and wore gps trackers for 6 months. Turned out, every day they were not in the house they gathered with a bunch of other cats a few houses up the street for the daily cat conference!

We have the nutriscore in the Netherlands too. I suppose Unilever is so powerful that the ngo’s/government’s agreed on what we have now.

You are right that it’s ridiculous that unhealthy food can get an A or B. The nutriscore shouldn’t compare within a group of similar products. That makes it quite worthless. Imo they should make F and G labels for snack/unhealthy processed food.

I had to look up what triticale is. From wikipedia:
Triticale (/trɪtɪˈkeɪliː/; × Triticosecale) is a hybrid of wheat (Triticum) and rye(Secale) first bred in laboratories during the late 19th century in Scotland and Germany.
