But I like they make voluntary "tax" payments on private income (less any private income spent for official purposes), when they're not obliged to.

"I take this opportunity to confirm my willingness and intention to continue the tradition of surrendering the hereditary revenues, including the crown estate, to my government for the benefit of all, in return for the sovereign grant, which supports my official duties as head of state and head of nation."

I don't really know what those words mean in terms of how much money and whether it's a net loss to the royals or the state.

I don't. I get soaked. I may have the old run to shelter in if it comes down in one piece. I need to sort something out for the coming winter. Last winter was pretty hard going. Getting wet isn't that bigger deal when the temperature is over 15C. At 2C or 3C it's not at all pleasant. On the bright side a few hours a day exposed to the elements is good for ones mental health.

You can have a look at hunting or trekking equipment. Hunters who stay posted have all kind of fun gear to stay dry like this tarp shelter, rain camouflage ponchos and huge umbrellas that you can see through.
I have a 20 euros rain poncho for hiking that's pretty efficient but I still get wet if it rains heavily for a long time.

@Perris I showed Merle and Piou-piou your tree huggers and it gave them some ideas.

I agree with you in part, but I think the money could be put to better use, especially in difficult times. The "there's no bread let them eat cake" symbol.
One can wonder what would happen nowadays if the king or queen turned out to be someone with dangerous political ideas. Edward 8 didn't last long but the institution of royalty wasn't reassessed I believe.

About the effect of the visitors to the - (et=ing) palace:. What annoys me at these mourning gatherings is the plastic folded flowers. And stuffed cuddle bears and other wel meant garbage items that pollute our environment.

I bet that Charles iii is annoyed by it too. But of course he wisely keeps his mouth shut after 69 years of potty training.

I don’t think Shad doesn’t need another shelter. He can put the chair in the sheltered run. And wait until the rain passes. (Maybe the chickens will like the extra shelter ).

Anyway. It crossed my mind that Shad might be too impatient to sit and wait. Even if its raining and .

No I don't either, but I expect the figures to be available somewhere. I'll see what I can find.

Another thing the accession made clear is that royal assets belong to the job not the person, so e.g. the Duchy of Cornwall estate passed automatically to William, who is now Duke of Cornwall (& Prince of Wales etc.). They are caretakers not owners of the property of the crown. They get to enjoy it on a daily basis, but can't e.g. sell it or exercise other normal property-owner's rights.

I expect you're right @BDutch about Charles' attitude to the plastic and artificial tat people want to deposit at various locations for various reasons. I'm not so sure you're right about him keeping his mouth shut about it tho!

@Perris I suppose it’s not a good idea to criticise the public , who loves you the most , for their behaviour. Not if you want to be king for another decade. And then want to pass it on to you’re eldest son.

But I would highly appreciate it.

Last week I visited an organic garden centre. And bought some plants for the shade. The plant are hopefully not too tasty as feed for my chickens.

A wonderful tree for chickens- an elderberry tree. Unfortunately ours isn't inside the part where our chickens are confined, so only the smaller chickens that can still cross the nettings go there, but I will plant another one and a mulberry tree inside the chicken's place this autumn. We had a bunch of three buxus trees that were killed by the buxus moth. Although they are native to our place, they are supposed to be toxic to chickens and they now are decimated by this invasive deadly moth, so I will replace them with more interesting trees for the chickens... but they won't grow as fast.

It looks like a wonderful place! Must have been hard to make a choice and restrain from spending too much .

It's always difficult for us to decide where to buy plants or trees, it's important that the climate isn't too different from where we live, and also that they are grown in good conditions. So that means either we have to travel a long way (like six hours there and back) either we compromise and buy from big garden centers. We've also done quite a few grafts and cuttings but we're not often successful .
