Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Two and a half hours out today. 35mph wind gusts weren't popular.

Weeded a patch for them.

I had a pensive afternoon with the allotment crew. Many people I know are struggling with life through ill health, getting older, family problems. Some say their world has been irrevocably changed with the arrival of Covid. For some it is not the disease itself, it's the human reactions and more importantly, the rections of their goverments. It's easy to feel depressed if one dwells on the subject.
I was watching Lima this afternoon. I really can't think of any other chicken I've known with such a drive to live and experience. When that gate opens Lima is off at a trot and heading for a likely forage spot. There are others who do the same but there is just something about Lima's determination that is quite humbling. I watch Lima for a while and see the joy in life.

Thank you for this observation; I find it really uplifting. Carpe diem!

I really enjoy our Welsummer! She is smart, non-flighty, and has great camouflage feathering. If you decide to go the non-production route, that is!
They are not easy to find here. We don't have the variety of breeds that are found in the US as there are no hatcheries for backyard chicken keepers.
I’m not looking forward to the second option, but I refuse to be like some people who just go and dump their unwanted chickens up a dirt road in the mountains somewhere.
No way. People really do that?
Aren't there any local breeds?
I am really not an expert at all, but I don't think so. It seems there was a provencale breed that grew extinct before there even was a standard before the war. This map shows the breeds by region for France and you can see a huge empty gap in the south east. There may be Italian breeds of closer origin than Livourne like the Bionda Piemontese, but I'm not sure they would be easy to find.
You are quite correct there the world is changing is it covid ?
Getting dark out real early now.

I personally think as COVID as a symptom or an eye-opener rather than a cause. But I was lucky it had such a small impact on my life ; would I say the same otherwise ?

The forest preserves north of me, have roosters dumped all the time. There's rescues that go and catch them.
Some are ones that get loose from some religion that sacrifices them. Not sure if I believe that. The news had people on that supposedly participated in the sacrifices. The news filmed it, except for the bloodletting. Could have been just for ratings.

Years ago there was supposed to be satanic cults doing stuff, but it was kids being stupid.
