Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I would be rather flattered! It is many decades since anyone doubted I was old enough to buy alcohol!
:gig
I remember being carded when I was in my late 20s and I laughed and said, "Oh, you charmer!" to the security guard, "I don't carry ID any more, sorry." He laughed and let me in 🤣

In case any of you don't know, the drinking age is 18 in Australia.

Nearly forgot my taxes!

My thinking is similar to RC's. Local and seasonal works, with exceptions for chocolate and tea, neither of which I can do without.

I believe I've already shared on this thread the news article on ALL commercial eggs becoming free range by 2036 where I live. In other words, it won't be possible to buy eggs from battery or caged hens.
2036 it should be immediately. The information is out and this should now be seriously considered.

My immediate neighbours shake in their slippers if they have a battery eggs box in their recycling bin and I look inside but I've noticed more free-range egg boxes lately I'm very pleased too say

That is what I do! Although I don't recall Amazon specifically ever asking my date of birth.
I actually got locked out of my A.mazon account in 2020 due to the fact that I changed my phone number. When I was in the process of acquiring a new #, updating my info with A.mazon wasn't foremost on my mind. When I got around to logging in and was denied access, their customer service wanted a driver's license with photo and date of birth to verify identity. Since I wasn't willing to disclose that info, I now use relatives' accounts to order incognito as needed, seldomly.
Linking accounts and disclosing privacy are two things I prefer to avoid, but not always possible.

Since I was too busy coop cleaning to take pics of my chickens today, here is a spring photo of visiting neighborly chickens:

The white ones, I believe, are Brahmas? I have really enjoyed their laid back and people-oriented personalities. The other chickens from this flock, not unlike most visitors, generally look for food, use the bathroom, and leave šŸ˜„

do you not have AI in Oz? things are going backwards elsewhere because of (ill-considered) rules brought in to try to prevent it.

I don't think we have the high incidence seen elsewhere.

It's hasn't been a huge hindrance to free ranging poultry on an industrial scale (yet). But there were culls in Victoria in 2020.

"Australia has a surveillance program to detect incursions of AI. The National Avian Influenza Wild Bird Surveillance (NAIWB) program collects and screens samples from Australian wild birds for AI viruses and the data generated are used to monitor and understand AI in wild birds in Australia. Over the life of the 18-year program, thousands of Australian wild bird samples have been screened with no high pathogenicity AI viruses detected in our wild birds."

It stayed dry and sunny and the ground is slowly drying out.
That must be good for the crew's morale and yours.
Look like you have some molters, how are they handling it ?
Henry was on his own tonight.

I find his attachment to the old coop kind of touching 😌.
While I applaud those who buy organic foodstuffs and even more so those who grow their own it just isn't posssible for the majority of people.
I can grow a small amount on the allotment, but this is the UK and lots of stuff I like won't grow here unless its greenhoused or under decent poly tunnels.
Frankly I would be more enthusiastic if the large retailers would just stop wrapping everything in plastic. Organic is great but it comes at a price and for many people that price is way out of their reach.
I realize my post may have come across as judgmental which wasn't my intention, I agree with you. My point was that even in our ideal setup where we have everything in place and the time to grow our organic vegetables we still buy some exotic stuff, so I can completely understand people working full time in cities not taking the time to buy local and organic.
There is a big political factor in the EU at least which is the type of agriculture that gets the public subsidies.
On plastic wrapping the EU has made a step forward. Wrapping fruits and vegetables in plastic under 1kilo 5 has been forbidden and also many single use plastic products.

However, I also really believe that's it's a lie to tell people we can make the environmental transition without changing anything or very little to our way of life. I think the changes required are going to have big impacts on most people's lives. I'm a collapsologist geek so I realize my pov is a little biased 🤣.

that looks like a very sensible approach, given your circumstances. I do hope you stay relatively free of HPAI.
