Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

When I looked in on him to say goodnight this evening he had his head tucked under his wing and was sleeping. Last winter when he and the hens were sleeping in the old coop it was hard to work out how he slept with various hens trying to wedge themselves underneath him.
All on his lonesome again?

This edit button keeps disappearing I cannot correct my mistakes :(

They should not ask in the first place.
You never ask a lady her age . ;)
Amazon and other companies have marketing strategies. They want to know how old you are to send you targeting advertisements that are interesting for someone of you’re gender and age and who knows what other information they have gathered already.

I have an alias birthday for the shops. 🥳 And often tell them I’m a man. 👨 Downside is that they send me viagra adds. 😂

The coop extension door connundrum.
The old coop used to have a door at the end of the run.
I have the coop extension run door frame ready.
The old coop door wasn't replaced or put back on at some point.
The reason given by C is because they worked shifts and couldn't be there to open them up. I'm sure there is some truth in the reason given.
Over the last year a few things about feeding have become apparent. If the chickens were fed early then by the time I get there they're ravenous. The closer my arrival time is to their last food the less hungry they are.
If there is any feed left in the trays then either they got given an awful lot of food early in the morning, or they got given it more recently.
My conclusion, with the aid of some other information is C is not getting up every morning at dawn and not getting out to the chickens until mid morning or later on some days.
So, if I fit the new coop extension door they will be confined to that area. This is not good. I don't trust C to adjust any tardiness to suit the better comfort and security the new door would give.
The fence around all the coops is not what I consider secure. My view is it's down to luck that more chickens haven't died from predation while in the run.
Obviously the door on the new coop extension would greatly increase night time security.
I'm having to think about this.

Well, there's your Christmas presents sorted. Everyone needs a little help every now and then.:p

While I applaud those who buy organic foodstuffs and even more so those who grow their own it just isn't posssible for the majority of people.
I can grow a small amount on the allotment, but this is the UK and lots of stuff I like won't grow here unless its greenhoused or under decent poly tunnels.
Frankly I would be more enthusiastic if the large retailers would just stop wrapping everything in plastic. Organic is great but it comes at a price and for many people that price is way out of their reach.

A further step which just isn't happening is for the UK to shut out the fast food chains.
Then there is the unenviable task of educating people like the couple in front of me in the supermarket who had their trolly stuffed with soft drinks, crisps or potato chips depending on which language one speaks, and ready meals.

Then a major problem that is very difficult to address is pursuading people not to eat so much.
Poisons have a price too.
They are the main cause of the reduction of insects (including bees).
Badly poisoned soil is not fertile anymore and it takes years to recover.
People get diseases (like Parkinson’s from growing flowers, )

The price of buying poisoned food is pennywise smart, but it also implicates a risk of you’re own health, the health of people working in the feed industry and the environment.

My thinking is similar to RC's. Local and seasonal works, with exceptions for chocolate and tea, neither of which I can do without.

I believe I've already shared on this thread the news article on ALL commercial eggs becoming free range by 2036 where I live. In other words, it won't be possible to buy eggs from battery or caged hens.
:celebrate Love it. Amazing! Are you sure this is not just a good idea of some politicians?

It took political will to get the ball rolling. There were consultations with farmers, animal rights activists, and consumers. But it's all done now.

Ex Batts good evening one and all!

I left early this morning to take hubby for his post op check up.

Got his sutures out with butterflies on his incision.

Ge can go home and do outpatient therapy.

Then we had lunch.

I had an afternoon appointment with the ENT.

Then we headed home.

65 clear 89% humidity feels like 66 rain 3%.

Have a great day!

sure thing; this shows the structure inside quite well (also showing the chickens leaving, disgruntled by my intrusion  ) View attachment 3322323
ps I didn't know there were different cultivars! I've got the basic model :p

Turns out that it is not available here. But also turns out it is related to Witch Hazel and American Witch Hazel has a similar growth pattern and good Fall color. I am going to see if I can find some to plant in spring. I already planted some native magnolia for the chickens so by next summer they should have a nice mainly native garden.
I am absurdly happy about that!
