@Perris I was a little surprised at the conscious/unconscious distinction in the proposed model. However as three of my hens have had surgical procedures, I quickly saw the merit. Then 10.5 on the ways in which people ought to comport themselves towards animals placed another layer of care over the top.

I was not familiar with the five freedoms. However, I hope I've always been familiar with kindness and respect and being sensible (all of which fail me too often for comfort, highlighting the need for standards of care especially in contexts where economic considerations are powerful).

You want to be careful people don't see you as a chicken rescue and start dropping their senior chickens off on you.
