Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

For us Dutchies, it so strange that lots of people have guns where you live. Here they are completely forbidden except for :
  • police and people with a licence to hunt (very difficult to obtain) ,
  • members of a shooting association who have a registration for proper behaviour and
  • collectors of old guns (historic) with a licence.
People who have a gun (secretly) are in general mafiosi (drugs) or other kind of criminals.
More guns than people here still. I have over a half dozen assorted rifles, shotgun and handguns.
When I was a kid it was common to bring guns to school during hunting season. Lean them up in a corner until school was done. Hunt on the way home. Now the kids hunt each other instead of rabbit or squirrel.

Nope, sounds safer.
Not much people get killed by firearms here. Stabbing accidents, kicking and fist fight are more common violent acts if things get out of hand , but they are less lethal.
The police is not trained to suppress. There main task is to catch criminals, keep things safe and help people who got into some kind of trouble.
I’m not saying they are always doing the right thing. But in general they are okay.

Police an gun tax:

Shad, your babies look great. Henry looks proud, alert and wonderful. Just beautiful. Glad you got some dirt to play with your chickens in. Most exciting chapter.

Agree to disagree.
Firearm related deaths per 100,000 of population
- US: about 10
- The Netherlands: about 0.5
Numbers are approximate as there are multiple sources.
I think you can agree to disagree on policy and on whether freedom is curtailed in the Netherlands relative to the US, but the numbers are not much in dispute.

I looked to see if I could find a stat with legal firearm related deaths per 100,000 in the US, but could not find one.

It must be difficult to acquire an illegal firearm in the Netherlands. The US has many illegal firearms smuggled across the border. If our residents lose the right to carry firearms legally, criminals will gain much here. An interesting stat I did find:

I would bet to venture that legal firearm deaths in the US is close to the Netherlands. However banning legal firearms here would not decrease the amount of firearm deaths. Too many illegal guns on our city streets.

Out of curiosity, what types of predators can be found in the Netherlands? Here in the US, living in certain areas we are up against coyotes, wolves, bobcats, black bears, alligators, and a slew of other animals that could cause harm with no protection.

I think many times people have a “one size fits all” solution to a problem. If the factors are not equal, the solution would not work when applied to another area.

Sorry for the off-topic. I have a family member who works on a task force to take illegal guns off the streets, and it is amazing how many illegal firearms are in surrounding communities. I have no problem with folks owning firearms legally. I wish there was a way to prevent more illegal ones from coming in.

Tax for firearm stats & explanations:
My poor farm EE, almost at the end of her molt. I miss her turquoise blue eggs! She is looking much better the past few days.

I grew up in the Appalachian mountains. As a young boy I was taught to respect firearms and the animals we hunted. Never shoot anything you won't eat. From the age of 5 to 8 I carried a bb gun whenever we went grouse hunting. Once I earned the trust of my father I could carry a 410 that wasn't loaded. Gradually I earned the right to carry a loaded firearm in the woods. My daughters don't hunt but my oldest shoots skeet and my youngest prefers to go to the pistol range. Above all respect the firearm and if you hunt then respect the animal.

Good sound advice.

What about number of lives saved by self defense and arming themselves? What about crimes that has been prevented from knowing others may have been armed? These are statistics hard to get and media certainly don't like to talk about it.

CCP disarmed Chinese citizens rather quickly otherwise Tian'an men Square would have been a different scenario. I am not saying Netherland and many European countries are going down that direction, but disarming citizens is a necessary step in authoritarianism.

Sorry for my political talk.

I think it's a very divisive debate in the US... but in Europe it's not. I would venture that for the majority of europeans it's even difficult to understand how there could actually be a debate. We associate democracy with the ban of legal weapons, except in the case of hunting. I think the historical premises to approach those questions are different. It's the same with death penalty. I will say it's one of the reasons I'm glad to live in Europe even though many things bother me regarding politics and society in my country. We have other strong divisive questions here too !
