Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Who is the father
I have no idea. Yellow legs should be Amadeo's or Fforest's, grey would be Killay's if I have understood the genetics aright. But leg colour has two layers and one of them doesn't show for the first few weeks.
Fret messing about looking for I don't know what instead of eating
I think she's looking for something that is not in the feed. Think pica.
Plums anyone
They look great - what variety?
What do their names mean? I'm not sure how to pronounce Betws. I'll try to find an audio of it.

ETA: is this correct? Bedis?
They are place names. The pronunciation is a bit variable; north and south walian are surprisingly different! I go betis, north walian is softer, towards the d.
Thought it was a typo. 🤣 But the name really exists as part of a Welsh village name. Betws-y-Coed.
Spot on! Idris is a mountain, Skomer an island, Towey a river.

Thanks! They're currently hovering at the door of the coop, obviously keen to come out, but mum's holding them back. She knows brooding is easier indoors than out on wet grass. Apparently some areas will see some sun today, but not us in the west of the country :( . This may be preferable to the sort of heatwaves some are enduring, but I and the chickens are really fed up with the dull days since June.

Thanks! Very helpful. Such a fascinating language. It always sounds so much different than I expect from reading it.

It's sad that you don't have many sunny days. Let's hope the chicks don't grow up cranky because of it :p . We are expecting another heat wave, and it's the first time we'll have chicks, so I don't know how they'll handle it. The adults handle it fine. Besides the brahma

I need at least 3 different emojis as a reaction to this post.
🤔😢🤣👍

Do you think Fret is a bit stupid when it comes to the hatching proces?
And why? Is it because she has never learned from an auntie? Or because she is a laying hybrid? Or bc she is named after a predator.
I don't think she's stupid. Intelligence is a rather meaningless term of flattery coined by humans in an attempt to elevate themselves above others.:p
She may be poorly educated due to social deprivation, lack of adequate parenting and lack of learning opportunities.

Which predator is named Fret?

I had to look this up. When she isn't broody her eating habits are normal. Perhaps she has the same kind of food preferences some pregnant women get.
Perhaps she finds sitting with a full crop uncomfortable.
Whatever the reason I wish she would get it sorted out because she's causing me stress!

They look great - what variety?
Victoria I think.
