Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

It has been a little crazy around here, the egg thief has been sick for almost 2 months, $10,000 later, turns out to be an upper respiratory infection on top of esophagitis, he is on a medication for gerd which seems to be helping and he is on the mend. I was sick for the first time in decades, but it only lasted a few days, likely from not sleeping and all that people time taking the egg thief to the doctor and hospital for tests.

We had a run of Fowl Pox, but all external and I applied neosporin to their wattles and combs to keep them from getting dry, sore and possibly infected. Everyone has come out of it fine and hopefully with natural immunity. The only thing that I can think of is something carried in by the little wild birds that like to share their feed.

Today, we redid the roosts and covered the poop boards with lino, to make them easier to clean. Tomorrow we are putting siding up on the coop. Our neighbor has a lovely little pool house that looks like an old-time cabin and they replaced the siding but had extra boards left,(enough to cover the big coop.), so we bought them and a nail gun. The chickens love all the projects, they supervise everything we do and cluck and coo at us.

Next month, we are expanding the run again, and I am going to start on the "Chicken" proof planters so they will have fresh herbs and things to forage, even in the winter months. Then we are going to get ready for the turkeys. I think that we are going to go with the White Holland breed, they are supposed to be good breeders and the white feathers should help them cope with our summers, and the Harvey Speckled, @Molpet suggested these heritage breeders , they have 2 small farms, about an 8 - 10 hour drive. Thank you @Molpet we are super excited about them!

All of the gifts and gifting can really get out of hand, and somewhat detracts from the real meaning of things. It's great that you have found activities that are more value-adding to you and your family!

Vent moment: Personally, I find excessive gifts from overly enthusiastic in-laws somewhat obnoxious. I have learned that traditions vastly vary from family to family. To me, materialism seems a poor substitute for meaningful relationships, personalized gratitude, and moderation!

Wet chicken tax for the gifting vent moment:

Gorgeous Tax! Chickens are a gift, everyday!

what's an ex battery chicken?
hello @Dragon Slayer Trinket , welcome to the thread :frow

An ex-battery chicken is one that has been born and kept to lay as many eggs as possible in as short a time as possible, and has then been thrown out by a commercial egg business at about 18 months-2 years old when it is considered 'spent'. It has then been rescued by people who want to give them a second chance at life by finding them new homes in people's backyards, rather than being turned into e.g. dogfood. As you read on you will come to know more about them and their rescuers.

Following! I konw I'm a little late. I'll catch up with y'all eventually. I'm already on page 8! :D

Also, what's an ex battery chicken?

The earlier pages of this thread are absolutely informative. I've left it somewhere along page 200, but I do want to get back into it. An Ex Battery hen is a hen that was used in the egg industry to produce the eggs that you'd find in the supermarket. The conditions in which they are kept in are nothing but inhumane. Most of these birds are ISA brown, or Red Sex Links

Oh my gosh. These are those chickens. I've heard about the conditions and would rather live without eggs than buy eggs from the grocery store.

I didn't even know that they could be rescued. How do you find out about rescuing them?

Wow, everyone that I've see on here who's rescued some, bless you.

It definitely is a labour of love. You'd have to reach out to organisations near you, that do the rescues directly from the factories. I do not know if one can rescue directly, I'd think not. Depending on where you live, this might not be an option. Here in Greece, for example, I have not heard of a confirmed case of a true Ex Battery hen being rescued. It could have happened. There are no organisations that go to rescue them on a regular basis, however
