Labour of love can imply a task for which there is no reward. I found the whole experience extremely rewarding. The downside is it's heartbreaking.

That is very true. I may never get the chance to have ex battery hens here, but I can definitely sympathise. Having ISA brown always leads to heartbreak. Such smart, personable birds, but they come with an expiration date that is much sooner than the regular chicken

Vile weather frankly. 45mph wind gusts, hail, dark and grey.
They went out for 15 minutes or so. Getting some grass was high priority.

They all gathered around my feet during the heaviest hail storm. They don't like it.

Finding out exactly what the carcasses are used for is difficult. We know some go to feed peoples cats and dogs but from what I can gather there is nothing to stop them being used for human consumption.
mom said she used to sell spent hens to Campbell soup. They used to advertise when they were coming through in the fall. These were old heritage birds .. in the late 1940's and 50s
When the cx came out they quit buying and people said the taste of the soup changed.

I think some get used for soups and precooked meals still.
