She had someone who cared enough to respect her in life & put a Walnut for the ferry chicken in her final resting place which is more than most get

So sorry to read about Carbon. In her final years, she got to live like every chicken should. She was well cared for by you, and her beloved Henry. She will be dearly missed, by Henry and you of course, but also all of us who read about her daily activities in this very small corner of the internet.

Chilly but dry this afternoon. I spent three and a half hours with them today.
Carbon died overnight. She didn't leave the nest box.
Henry definitely missed her today. I think everyone will in their fashion.
This is what's left of the 26 chickens I started with a few days short of three years ago.

Thank you all very much for the condolences. I will pass them on to Henry and Fret who after all have been friends with her long before I arrived at the field.

Henry and Fret were rather subdued today.
I'm still struggling with the after effects of Covid and this ghastly shingles business and really just wanted to get in next to Henry and Fret for a cuddle.

I removed the upright dividor; one less place for mites to hide. Everyone seems to accept they all need to live together and roosting is fairly peacefull these days.
Less mites today so I'm making progress. Mini blow torch should arrive tomorrow. I'm hoping I can get it to do the mite erradication without coop damage.

It is somehting I've thought about but Carbon had been having problems for some time now. She was getting on in for her breed. The breeding for small hens that eat less comes with a cost and that cost is according to others I know of who keep CCLs is a couple of years less life expectancy. Carbon was seven, maybe eight years old which is a fairly standard age for her breed. Given the conditions she endured for all but the last three years she did well to live as long as she did.

You knew the night you lifted her up to the egg box she wouldn't make it didn't you? I wonder if Henry and fret knew. Hope the rest keep strong and well and you recover yourself too.

And get rid of the mites.
